5-A Boys State Championship Finals

Wheeler “Wildcats” vs. Norcross “Blue Devils”

Gwinnett Arena - Duluth, GA

The Wildcats Upset the Devils

The best state finals game in the state would be played between the up setting Wheeler “Wildcats” versus the undefeated Norcross “Blue Devils”. The Blue Devils would come in 31-0 off a victory over Stephenson to reach the finals. While Wheeler would blow by Newton to reach the finals. “I would say a lot but talking would be done at the tip-off.”

Norcross Jodie Meeks would open the game up with a three- pointer and Wheelers James Florence would answer back with three. Norcross Daniel “Lumber Jack” Emerson would get on the boards with 2 points on a put back and it would continue. Next, Florence would nail another three pointer for Wheeler and the super senior Shaurad Curry would score 4 straight points. Before you know it the score is 11-5 and Norcross calls a time out. After the time out, Meeks would sink a jumper to cut into the lead and teammate Bryan Bostic would score moving the lead even closer 13-9. Curry would hit two free throws for the Wildcats, but Emerson would get the 2 points back for the Blue Devils on a lay up 15-11. Meeks just wouldn’t stop scoring, he would cut the lead to 2 points with a drive in the lane for 2 and the first quarter would end close with Wheeler 15 Norcross 13.

Kut Timeout:  Great first quarter, close and fast. Kind of like the fast and the fury. Dem Boyz Got Work.

To begin the second B.J. Corley would get on the boards with 2 points, followed by teammate J.T. Tiller for 3 points and Curry for 2 points to put the lead at 22-13 with 5:38 to play. Bostic would try to slow the fumes of the Wild Cats with 2 free throws but Wheelers Florence would even that score on a back door cut for 2 points 22-15. Curry would go 1 for 2 from the line and teammate Corley would score on the next basket to move the score to 27-15. Meeks would drive to the hole to score for Norcross but ever time they score Wheeler would have an answer in Florence for 2 points 29-17. Bostic would make a 1 for 2 for the Devils and Wheeler would do like they always do, answer with 2 free throws from David Gonzalvez. Wheeler would hold for the last shot to go into the half to the score 31-18.

Kut Intermission:  The Wildcats move out on the Blue Devils slowly. Sharuad Curry is a Floor General. Wheeler came out running the floor (Playing their game) and I don’t think the Devils where ready for that. Sixteen more exciting minutes is left to see who will wear the crown. I got you right here stay tune.

After halftime, Wheeler would start that running thing again after the half with 2 points from Florence and Gonzalvez to move the lead to 35-18. Emerson would go on his own 4-0 run for the Devils with 3 rebounds and the Bostic would score 4 straight points to close the gap to single digits 35-26 leading to a Wildcats time out. After the timeout, Bostic wasn’t finish scoring. He would come out to score on a drive to the basket 35-28 to move even closer. The Wildcats Corley would hit 1-2 from the free throw line to start a 6-2 run with basket from Tiller and Gonzalvez. The Blue Devils would still fight. Emerson and Reggie Anderson would score baskets and with 1:45 left in the quarter the score would be 41-32 in favor of Wheeler. Chris Hanna would finally score for the Wildcats along with points from Curry to close the quarter out strong 44-32.

Kut Timeout: The Blue Devils are displaying a lot of heart. They would get close in the quarter but it seems every time that Norcross would score the Wildcats would have an answer. It’s hard to say but there is one more quarter, lets see what happens.

The fourth and final quarter would go like this. Florence would come out to score on a three-point play. Norcross Maurice Walker would hit one free throw and Anderson score on a drive to the basket to move the score to 47-35 with 5:29 left in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats would always answer the question. Corley would score a basket for Wheeler and Meeks would hit 1 free again for the Devils. (Anyway 49-36, Lets go)  The back and forth game would start again with Bostic scoring for Norcross and Tiller scoring for Wheeler. James Florence would just be on a tare, scoring in the paint on a floater to push the lead to 15 points 53-38 with 2:31 left. Florence would hit 2 free throws on the following position and the window would close. Wheeler High wins its fourth state championship in 10 years.
