Redan wins back-to-back state track crowns
Jefferson, GA

The rain delays and lightning strikes weren’t enough to slow down Redan High School at the 34th Annual Georgia Olympics Track & Field State Championship in Jefferson, GA on Saturday. The fleet footed “Raiders” ran away with 4 individual and 2 relay titles enroot to their 2nd consecutive Class 5A Track & Field State Championship. The championship marks the second within a two week period for Redan High School who’s girls team won their state track championship a couple of weeks ago in Albany, GA.

Justin Oliver who was named the 4SHOT Sports “Co-Most Outstanding Performer” in Class 5A is a senior sprinter for the “Raiders” who is headed to Texas A&M on a track scholarship next year took home 5 gold metals, winning the 200 and 400 Meters, the Long Jump and ran a leg on both of Redan’s victorious relay teams. Oliver’s win in the Long Jump was his second gold in two years for that event. Teammate David Chaplin, who will be running for the Iowa “Hawkeyes” next year wasn’t far behind taking home 3 gold metals (100M, 4x100 and 4x400 Relays).

Redan’s victorious relay teams consisted of Oliver, Chaplin, Shaun Johnson, Montez Valentine, Johnny Barnes, Victor Porter, Marlon Campbell, Tony McCord and Quint Byrd.

McEachern’s Ben Hubers turned in 2 dominating performance in the distances event’s taking home gold in the grueling 1600 and 3200 meter races which also earned him the Robert Aldridge and Sam Burke Trophies for the best times of the day (3:18.910 in the 1600M and a time of 9:21.210 in the 3200M).

Wheeler’s Chris Hanna who was looking to repeat as champion in the High Jump had to settle for 2nd place behind rival Jerome McKenzie from Marietta High School who captured the gold with a leap of 6’-10”. Chris Hail from Lovejoy High School returned to Jefferson to pick up the gold in the Triple Jump with a jump of 46’-8”, Hail took home the silver last year.
