Johnson C. Smith University and Benedict College will play for the first time since 1998 in this years’ 4th Annual Palmetto Capital City Classic. Johnson C. Smith leads the match up winning 8 of the teams 11 meetings.
Last year in 2004 Benedict Tigers lost to SC State University 51- O in a shut out and the previous 2 years lost to Bulldogs of SC State 41-7 and 52-7.
Benedict finished 6-5 in 2003 and 3-8 in 2004, so this year head coach John Hendrick and assistant coach Michael Montgomery looks to get off to a better start. The Tigers enter the game with a 1-1 record, losing their opening game of the season to Morehouse 17-20, but bounced back with last week win over Savannah State 31-14 Senior Quarterback Tremaine Lyle will quarterback the attack for the Tigers, where he looks to break out of a slump and lead Benedict College to their first ever Palmetto Capital City Classic. Lyle passes for only 76 yards in last year’s game.
On the other side line of the Palmetto Capital City Classic is the Johnson C Smith Golden Bulls. The Golden Bulls enter their first trip to the classic with a 0-2 record, losing their first game of the season to Glenville State 9-33 and last week to Bowie State 9-12. The Golden Bulls are anchor on the defensive side of the ball in the secondary, cornerback Travis Johnson, George Pope III and linebacker Omar Bizell. Bizell enters the game coming off a team high 10 tackles, while Travis Johnson intercepted 2 passes against Bowie State and George Pope III finished with 12 tackles against Glenville State. Running back Andre Williams from Gaston, North Carolina carries the load for the Golden Bulls.
