You could feel the anticipation in the air as a sea of red clad Georgia “Bulldog” fans started to fill up Sanford Stadium for the opening game of the 2005 College Football season against Boise State. Yea it was the opening game but it was also the long awaited debut of senior D.J. Shockley’s as the UGA starting quarterback.
After four seasons of playing behind former signal-caller David Greene (now with the Seattle Seahawks of the NFL) Shockley a former High School All-American quarterback at North Clayton H.S. where he played for his father Don Shockley Sr. will take his first snap as the man in charge of guiding the “Bulldogs” attack and attack he did.
Georgia scored 48 points and Shockley had his hand in every score. On the day Shockley completed 16 of 24 passes for 289-yards and 4 touchdowns, he also ran for 1 score as he “Shockley the World” in a convincing 48-13 win.
Having not eaten since New Year’s Day when they beat Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl the “Dawgs” defense smelled the “Bronco” burgers on the grill early as LB-Tony Taylor (Oconee County H.S.) picked off Boise State QB-Jared Zabransky with less than :25 seconds gone in the game giving Georgia a first down on the “Broncos” 35-yard line.

Shockley didn’t waste anytime working the huge crowd into a frenzy ripping off runs of 13 and 14-yards, the later was good for a touchdown as his teammates mob him in the endzone. The PAT by K-Brandon Coutu (Collins Hill H.S.) made the score 7-0.
Lightning struck again quickly in the form of the “Dawgs” defense when reserve LB-Dannell Ellerbe picked off another Zabransky pass at the Georgia 29-yard line and returned it out to the 38-yard line. Last years leading rusher sophomore Thomas Brown (Tucker H.S.) busted loose for 18-yards to the Boise State 44-yard line. A few plays later Shockley went deep to WR-Kenneth Harris, who was wide open behind the defense for 40-yards and a touchdown as Georgia took a 14-0 lead.
A fumble by former Pebblebrook H.S. star Thomas Flowers on a punt return seemed to be the only way the “Bulldogs” could be slowed down. Boise State recovered the fumble on the Georgia 25-yard line. The “Dawgs” defense which had been dominate early on got big plays from DE-Quentin Moses (Cedar Shoals H.S.) and LB-Brandon Miller (Miller County H.S.). Miller put a big pass rush on Zabransky and forced him to fumble and Moses recovered the ball on the Georgia 25-yard line turning back a Boise State threat as the first quarter drew to a close.

Early in the second-quarter former Stephenson H.S. All-American RB-Kregg Lumpkin entered the game to a loud round of cheers. This was Lumpkin’s first action since scoring the winning touchdown in the 2003 Capital One Bowl game against Purdue. He sat out last year with a knee injury.
A 28-yard pass completion from Shockley to 6-8 TE-Leonard Pope (Americus H.S.) covered 28-yards to the Boise State 42-yard line. The drive stalled and the Bulldogs” were forced to punt. They say that when it rains it pours and that is how Zabransky had to fill facing the Georgia defense because they picked him off for the third time in the half when FS-Tra Battle (Mary Persons H.S.) turned the trick and returned it 17-yards to the “Broncos” 41-yard line. Georgia would turn that into a 43-yard field goal by Coutu and a 17-0 lead.
Each time it appeared as if Boise State was going to hit the Georgia endzone the defense would respond, SS-Greg Blue (Banneker H.S.) one of the biggest hitters in the SEC showed he could do more than just knock people out intercepting a forth Zabransky pass at the “Dawgs” 25-yard line ending another scoring chance for the “Broncos”.

With under 1:00 minute to play in the half Moses recovered his second fumble of the game to give Shockley and the offense great field position on the Boise State 20-yard line. Shockley completed a dream first half when he hit RB-Danny Ware (Rockmart H.S) streaking out of the backfield down the sideline for 20-yards and the touchdown. Coutu’s PAT gave Georgia a 24-0 halftime lead.
In the third quarter Georgia really put the game away, former Benjamin E. Mays star Bryan McClendon returned the second half kick-off 28-yards to the 31-yard line. McClendon who starts at wide-receiver then caught an 8-yard pass from Shockley. Brown who had been held in check most of the game picked up 7-yards and a first down out to the 44-yard line. Shockley then went up top to TE-Martrez Milner (West Hall H.S.) for 56-yards and a touchdown.
Shockley would lead the “Bulldogs” to two more touchdowns, each to WR-Sean Bailey (Milton H.S.) covering 31-yards and 5-yards as Georgia branded the “Broncos” 48-13.
