The clash between Westover and Monroe gave an inclination of what is to come in Class 1-AAA girls basketball for the 2005-06 season with Westover holding on to defeat Monroe 37-34 at the Albany Civic Center on Saturday.
Kendra Berry of Westover led all scorers with 23 points to lead her Lady Patriots in their first win of the season.
Westover controlled the game from the opening tip and took a 17-14 lead to the lady’s room at the half with berry doing her thing on the perimeter and penetrating to the basket to scoring 12 of Westover’s 17 points.
Monroe didn’t lay down making several attempts to take the game over on the play of Domonique Gilbert pounding the defensive and offensive boards taking her team on a 12-9 run in the third to tie the game at 26.
Berry sparked the Lady Patriots coming out on the first play of the final period to knock down a WNBA three-pointer that seemed to take the life out of the Lady Tornadoes.
Berry went on to score 11 points to Monroe’s seven giving Westover their first region win of the young season.
Westover:
Kendra Berry scored a game high 23 points while pulling down eight rebounds to lead Westover. Domonique Bryant led the team in assists with six while making seven swipes.
Monroe:
Domonique Gilbert led the Lady Tornadoes with 14 points while hitting the boards for 12 rebounds. Keandrea Kegler scored 10 points while pulling down six rebounds.
