Luck of the Irish not needed in win over Bulldogs

Quiet play, loud results for Wright

Macon Centreplex – Macon

Dublin High squared off against Hancock Central in the third game of a four game set in the Mac-Town Shootout.  Dublin, who boasts the 15th ranked player in the 4SHOT Hoops Burning 50 in Chris Wright, looked to impose their will on the Bulldogs of Hancock Central.  The Bulldogs, however, hoped for a different turnout.

Wright opened the game up with five quick points as Dublin jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but Dennis Jackson and the Bulldogs would answer.  Dublin held a 12-9 lead with 2:44 remaining in the period until the Bulldogs’ Arvie Shivers hit one from outside the arc to tie the game.  Dublin then picked up their defensive intensity and added five more points to end the period with a five point lead, 17-12.

Ben Smith took control of the scoring responsibilities for the Fighting Irish at the start of the second period, but the Bulldogs bit back.  After tying the ball game up at 23 on a mid-range jumper by Jackson, the Bulldogs went up for the first time with a driving lay up by Tarvis Birston.  Hancock went on to take a one point lead into the half, 30-29.

Dublin opened up the third with 8-2 run to take an early five point lead in the second half.  Turnovers and fast breaks kept Hancock at a safe distance, but the Bulldogs wouldn’t stay down long.  But after a Jackson lay up cut the Irish lead to one, Wright woke up.  The Wright three and a Smith penetration lay in extended Dublin’s lead to six with 1:14 left in the third period.   And that’s how the third would end, 42-36.

After yet another Irish run to start off the fourth period, Dublin found themselves with a comfortable 17 point lead.  The Bulldogs were held scoreless for the first 3:22 minutes of the period, while Dublin went on an 11-0 run.  Led by Wright’s game high 27 points and 13 rebounds, and outscoring the Bulldogs 22-7 the Irish went on to what was a hard win even though a final score of 64-43 doesn’t reflect it.

Final Score:  Dublin 64 – Hancock Central 43
