Gold’s Gym Holiday Classic
Salem unpatriotic to "Lady Patriots"
Courtney Hurt named MVP
Salem H.S. – Conyers, GA

| Salem So.- Courtney Hurt |
The “Lady Seminoles” from Salem H.S. lost senior star PG-Kristina Huff in the second game of the season and you would think that Head Coach Bill Roberts’ squad would be struggling but they looked like they haven’t missed a beat as they steam rolled a young Heritage team (that lost their star player 6-1 junior Jewel May in their semi-final win) to win the Gold’s Gym Holiday Classic Championship.
Remember the name Courtney Hurt; Hurt is a 5-11 sophomore who is quickly getting her name mentioned with the other top sophomores across the state. With May on the bench nursing an injury Heritage had no answer for Hurt who was unstoppable as she scored a game high 26 points and was named the tournaments MVP.
With sophomore guard Rebecca Mitchell now running the point Salem jumped out to an early lead. With 2:17 left in the 1st quarter Mitchell knocked down a threepointer to make the score 10-2.-

| Heritage freshmen Sarah Herrington (#24) and Jasmine Middlebrooks (#5) look like they are going to be a tough backcourt in the future. |
Not wanting to give the “Lady Patriots” any room to breath Salem jumped into a full-court press that caused Heritage all kinds of problems. Heritage’s only other real scoring threats junior Dru Henderson and senior Amanda Radford often times found themselves being double teamed and struggled badly, missing several easy shots. Salem hit 7 of 8 free throws to take a 16-2 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.
Heritage picked up their play in the 2nd quarter, 5-11 sophomore Lauren Cummings did a nice job of battling inside for the “Lady Patriots”. Henderson finally got on the board and freshman guards Sarah Herrington and Jasmine Middlebrooks did a better job against Salem’s full-court pressure. Hurt continued to do her thing inside adding 5 more points to her total as the “Lady Seminoles” took a 29-15 lead into the half.
Salem came out in the 3rd quarter and hit everything they put up. Senior Kevara Flowers and Hurt each scored 6 points and former Stone Mountain star Joy Thomas started pounding the glass as Salem scored 20 point in the quarter to take a commanding 49-22 lead.
The 4th quarter was just a formality as both teams substituted freely and Salem went on to a convincing 71-30 win to capture the 2005 Gold’s Gym Holiday Classic. Rebecca Mitchell (Heritage) and Rebecca Mitchell (Salem) were named to the All-Tourney team and Courtney Hurt from Salem was the tournaments Most Valuable Player.
