Wolves take down the Spartans

Soft beep but not a loud beep.

Spartan Gymnasium – Norcross, GA

6'9 Sophmore Howard Thompkins is the future of the Wolves.
The Wesleyan Wolves versus the Spartans would be as usual, a rivalry game. The news got reported that there was a beep at Wesleyan, so I jumped in the beep mobile to see what was happening. Once I got on the scene, I found out that it was only a false alarm. With GAC taking the edge in the early season football game over Wesleyan, the Wolves and a coach Bill Bufton look to paint a different picture on the court.

Wesleyan Howard Thompkins would be powerhouse for the Wolves. The 6’8 center would dominate the paint and the glass. Thomas would often step outside and test the three point range to no avail but would do enough to give the Spartans all they could handle.

The Spartans on the other hand would play a complete team game and Coach Ron Bradley would leave it up to senior point guard Gardner Bell to be the floor general.

The game would get on underway with a backdoor cut by Peter Karempelis and a jumper by Matt Hutts to get the Wolves out the gate fast to a 4-0 lead. The Spartans would get on the boards on a jumper by junior Taylor Wood over Thompkins. The Wolves would continue to press the issue in the first period with another basket by Karempelis moving the score to 8-2 with 6:22 to go in the first, leading coach Bradley to call a timeout. After the timeout, Thompkins would get his second block of the night and score on a turn around jumper on the other end to move the score to 10-2. The Spartans would make a run in the first getting close as 3 points, 12-9. The Wolves' Karempelis would end the run with another basket on the break for 2 points, closing the first period out 17-11.

Halftime Wesleyan 28 GAC 19 / Third Period Wesleyan 36 GAC 26

In the fourth period, the game would move to a 14-point lead on a lay-up by Tanner Smith to the score 40-26. The crowd would start to chant “GAC, GAC, GAC, GAC” and the Spartans would respond with a 14-3 run. The run would be topped off by a three-pointer from senior Brock Bennett with 2:55 left in the fourth period to the score 40-43.  With 1:15 left in the game, Coach Bufton would advise his guys to hold the ball up with the score at 44-40 and the Wolves would win it from the line. Smith would go to the line to hit the clutch free throws that would seal it.

Final Score: Wesleyan 50 GAC 40
