Kentucky vs. Georgia Tech ”Lady Wildcats” avoids being stung! Humphrey's 14-pts and 8-rebs lead the way
Gwinnett Civic Center – Duluth, GA
 |
| Kentucky's Carly Ormerod is fouled by Tech's Jill Ingram. |
 |
| Kasha Terry just missed a double-double with 10-rebs and 9-pts. |
The “Lady Yellow Jackets” from Georgia Tech got off to a great start against the SEC’s “Lady Wildcats” from Kentucky as former Central Gwinnett star Stephanie Higgs and All-ACC candidate Chioma Nnamaka each scored a pair of baskets to give Tech a 8-2 lead.
After a lack luster performance against Duke a few days ago former area high school star Kasha Terry (Douglas County H.S.) rebounded with a performance that I know Head Coach MaChelle Joseph would love to see out of her 6-3 senior every game. Terry was not only active on the boards but was real active inside offensively as the “Lady Yellow Jackets” opened up a 10-4 lead.
 |
| Tech's Kentrina Williams and Kentucky's Jennifer Humphrey battle for position. |
Behind the play of Jennifer Humphrey and Sarah Elliott the “Lady Wildcats” slowly climbed back into the game. With 5:02 left in the half Humphrey scored on a rebound put back to pull Kentucky to within one 19-18.
Terry continued to be a force inside scoring on back-to-back rebound lay-ups. Jill Ingram who sat out the Duke game made her presence felt scoring off of a steal to push Georgia Tech’s lead to 27-22 with just under 2:00 minutes left in the half.
With the time running out in the half, Higgs pulled up and drilled a three-pointer. Kentucky countered as Carly Ormerod scored her second straight basket at the buzzer as Kentucky cut the halftime lead to 30-26. A three-pointer by Kentucky’s Samantha Mahoney at the start of the 2nd half cut the lead to one 30-29. A few moments later Humphrey hit a jumper to tie the game at 31-31. Kentucky did a much better job on the boards in the 2nd half as Roddy, Humphrey and Elliott got after it.

| Tech's Jill Ingram chases after a loose ball. |
A three-point play by Ormerod with 16:26 to play gave the “Lady Wildcats” their first lead of the game 38-36. A basket by Georgia Tech’s Jessica Williams (Riverdale H.S.) and 2 free-throws by April Phillips helped the “Lady Yellow Jackets” regain the lead 40-38.
The teams took turns trading the lead back and forth. Terry’s 3rd block of the game lead to a three-pointer by Nnamaka and a Georgia Tech 51-46 lead.
Each time it appeared as if Tech was about to seize control of the game Kentucky would step up their game. A 7-0 run spearheaded by a three-point play from reserve Jenny Pfeiffer helped the “Lady Wildcats” take a 59-55 lead with 4:05 to play.
 |
| Tech's Jacqua Williams tries to avoid fouling Samantha Mahoney. |
A steal and basket by Ingram with 1:31 on the clock pulled Tech to with one 61-60. Two big free-throws by Pfeiffer gave Kentucky a 63-60 lead with :42 ticks on the clock. Tech was forced to start fouling; Roddy hit 3 of 4 freebies down the stretch as Kentucky went on to a hard fought 66-62 win.
Scoring Recap
Kentucky: Jennifer Humphrey scored a game high 14 points, hauled down 8 rebounds and handed out 4 assists to lead Kentucky. Eleia Roddy finished with 13 points and 7 rebounds while teammate Samantha Mahoney added 10 points.

Univ. of Miami vs. Georgia Georgia avoids a hurricane! Chambers lead 5 in double-figures for UGA
Gwinnett Civic Center – Duluth, GA
 |
| UGA's Cori Chambers drilled 5 three-pointers. |
Georgia jumper out to a 7-3 lead on a three-pointer by Cori Chambers but they also found themselves without the services of their All-SEC performer Tasha Humphrey (a former Gainesville H.S. All-American) who picked her 2nd personal foul with less than 4:00 minutes gone in the game and had to sit out the remainder of the 1st half.
Miami’s Tamara James, who hit a three-pointer earlier, stuck a jumper to cut Georgia’s lead to 9-7. A few moments later another part of the “James Gang”, Lamese James hit a short jumper to give the “Lady Hurricanes” their first lead of the game 10-9.
Chambers was stroking the ball nicely as she banged out her 2nd three-pointer giving Georgia a 15-12 lead. With Humphrey on the bench former East Coweta H.S. star 6-3 So.-Megan Darrah an and 6-4 Sr.-Desire Bostice had to pick up the slack inside. Bostic scored on a rebound put back and hit 1 of 2 free-throws as the “Lady Bulldogs” surged back into the lead 20-14 with 11:38 left in the half.
 |
| Tamara James drives past UGA's Danielle Taylor on her way to a game high 26 points. |
With 7:40 left on the clock Renee Taylor drilled a three-pointer for Miami to cut into Georgia’s lead but Darrah came right back and hit one from the baseline to make the score 26-19.
Chambers once again gave the fans a look at that sweet jumper when she drilled her 3rd three-pointer of the half giving the “Lady Bulldogs” their largest lead 29-21 at the 5:27 mark. Just when it looked like Georgia was going to start pulling away 6-3 Jr.-Amy Audibert from Miami completed a three-point play to cut the lead to 29-25.
Towards the end of the half Georgia, led by former local area stars 5-8, Sr.-Sherill Baker (Greater Atlanta Christian H.S.), 5-7Jr.-Janese Hardrick (McEachern H.S.) and Chambers the “Lady Bulldogs” went on a 10-0 run and built up a 39-27 lead.
With time running out in the half Miami’s Latoya Cunningham made a lay-up to stop the bleeding as Georgia took a 40-29 lead into the half.
 |
| Tasha Humphrey almost rips off Melissa Knights arm grabbing this rebound. |
It wasn’t a particularly a good day for Georgia’s Tasha Humphrey as she picked up her 3rd personal foul with 1:06 seconds gone in the 2nd half. Chambers picked right up where she left off in the 1st half busting another three-pointer (her 4th of the game) as Georgia took their largest lead of the game 45-30.
T. James hit 2 free-throws for Miami but it was apparent that the “Hurricane” was starting to die down and a lot of it was because of that “Hurricane Buster”, Cori Chambers. The 5-9 junior from Elmsford, N.Y. had a big night shooting the rock as she stuck her 5th three-pointer, increasing the “Lady Bulldogs” lead to 53-32 with 13:38 to play.
To say that Georgia Head Coach Andy Landers or Miami Head Coach Katie Meier were elated with the officials would be an understatement, as some very questionable calls where being made.
 |
| Miami's Albrey Grimsley tries to drive past UGA's Sherill Baker. |
With 2:04 to play Miami got a three-pointer from T. James to pull to within 12 points 69-57 but that is as close as they would get, Humphrey scored on a rebound put-back and Alexis Kendrick hit a pair of free-throws as Georgia went on to a 74-59 win.
Scoring Recap
Georgia: Cori Chambers scored 17 points that included 5 three-pointers to lead Georgia. Sherill Baker finished with 15 points and had 4 steals. Megan Darrah and Tasha Humphrey each finished with 11 points. Alexis Kendrick chipped in with 10 points.
Miami: Tamara James scored a game high 26 points and grabbed a game high 9-rebounds to pace Miami. Renee Taylor added 9 points while teammates Lamese James and Albrey Grimsley each chipped in with 6 points.
