L.A. "Keeping It with Real" with Chris Colvin

Earlier this season Street Talk caught up with one of the best keep secrets in the state of Georgia, but like they say “if you snooze, you loose”. You see what UGA got in Billy Humphrey when everybody else was sleeping. Well it looks like the Southeastern Louisiana “Lions” have done the same thing with the signing of Lithonia High School’s sweet shooting all-star Chris Colvin. I got a chance to sit down and “Keeping it Real” with Chris after his game against Newton County H.S.

Chris Colvin: A 6-2 senior Combo-Guard. Chris is the winner of the Wendy’s Heisman at Lithonia High School. Chris was also nominated for High School Who’s Who in America. A true student athlete, who sports a 3.5 grade point average while posting a 1040 on the SAT.

L.A.: Chris, first of all let me congratulate you on your signing with S.E. Louisiana. What final 3 or 4 schools did it come down to before you chose S.E.?”
Chris:
“Thank you. It came down to Jacksonville, UNC Charlotte and S.E..”

L.A.: “What made you decide on S.E.?”

Chris: “S.E. Louisiana was real nice to me, when I went down there I had a lot of fun, met all of the players and felt at home there. My daddy and my grand parents really helped me a lot in making my decision.”

L.A.: “Who have been some of the most influential people in your life”?
Chris:
“My father and my AAU coaches, they have helped me out a lot, through thick and thin.”

L.A.: “At what point in your career here at Lithonia did you say to yourself, man my game is to the point that I know I can play at the college level?”
Chris:
“My sophomore year. When I came in there were 9 seniors on the team and I just came in and was the only sophomore and when I got in the game I did what I had to do, so I knew then that I got do it.”

L.A.: “At the time Robert Dozier, who is now at Memphis State was on the team. Seeing what he has done down there does that help motivate you?”
Chris: “Yes Sir, I know if I can play with him I can play anywhere against other D-1 prospects.”

L.A.: “What has been some of the most memorable moments in your career so far?
Chris:
“Probably my sophomore year when I got my first dunk. It was a break-away dunk. Then the next time down the court they threw me another alley and I flushed that one too.”

L.A.: “What moment(s) would you most like to forget?”
Chris: “It was during AAU when I found out I wasn’t going to play a lot. I got some minutes then by the end of AAU season I was getting a lot of time on the floor.”

L.A.: “Who has been one of the toughest players you have had to guard?”

Chris: “There really hasn’t been anybody in my region but during AAU season it’s been Jodie Meeks. Jodie is a real tough player to play against, you have to work hard to stay in front of him and play him tight.”

(l-r) Mr. Eddie J. Robinson Jr., Mr. Chris Colvin Sr., Mr. Derrick Boochee, Mrs. Linda Colvin, HC Mr. Lewis Jones.
L.A.: “Now that you have signed, what are you going to have to continue to work on to get ready for college?”

Chris: “Defense, weights and my handle. If I get in the weight room and keep improving my handle then I know I will be able to get some playing time.”

L.A.: “Do you have any ideal what position S.E. will want you to play?”
Chris: “I’m going to be a combo guard.”

L.A.: “Chris, again now that you have signed, what are your goals for this year?”
Chris: “Just keep trying to get these wins, win the region and possible win the state championship.”

L.A.: “Do you find that there is a difference playing AAU ball verses playing in the regular season?”
Chris: “Yes, AAU is a lot more up tempo and you might play 2 – 3 games in a day verses playing the 1 varsity game, so your focus is just on that game. In AAU you have to be focused all day. It’s totally different to me, really hectic.”

L.A.: “Do you like playing more of an up tempo style of game?”
Chris: “I’m an up tempo kind of guy, I love to get up and down the floor.”

L.A.: “Tell me something about yourself that people might not know?”
Chris: “A lot of people might think that when I’m on the floor that I might be kind of cocky, but I’m really a laid back kind of guy.”

L.A.: “Do you have any set routines that you follow before each game?”
Chris: “I stretch, then I pray right before we line up for the jump ball, that’s about it.”

L.A.: “What is the strongest part of your game?

Chris: “I would have to say my jump shot, (laughing) but not tonight.”

L.A.:  “I’m going to throw out some word comparisons and I want you to choose one”

Chris: “Ok”

L.A.:   “Nike, Reebok or Adidas?”

Chris: “Nike”

L.A.:  “Sean John, Fubu or Roca-Wear?”
Chris: “Roca-Wear”

L.A.:  “Escalade, Denali, Corvette, Mercedes or Ferrari?”
Chris: “Denali”

L.A.: “Halle Berry, Bianca or Janet Jackson?”

Chris: “Bianca”

L.A.:  “Who’s your favorite player?”
Chris: “Right now I would have to say my favorite players are between Nate Robinson, T-Mac and Lebron James.”

L.A.: “Mr. Colvin, I appreciate it man….good luck at S.E. next year.”
Chris: “Thank you, I appreciate it.”
