LSU's Seimone Augustus wasn't named the 2005 National College Player of the Year just because she plays at LSU..the girl is GOOD!, and when the game is on the line there is know one you would rather give the ball to than her..just asked a stunned UGA team that had LSU on the ropes until Augustus hit a jumper with 14 seconds to play to give the No. 3 ranked "Lady Tigers" from LSU a thrilling 65-64 win in front of a fired up Georgia home crowd.
It was defiantly a playoff type atmosphere at Stegeman Coliseum as No. 3 ranked LSU rolled into town to play the 13th ranked “Lady Bulldogs” from Georgia. Also returning to Georgia with the “Lady Tigers” were 2 former All-State high school performers, Ashley Thomas a 6-1 sophomore from Stephenson H.S. in Stone Mountain and Marian Whitfield a 5-9 sophomore from Glenn Hills H.S. in Augusta, GA.
Augustus got off to a good start sticking a pair of jumpers and Thomas, who was injured last season showed why she is now a starter as she grabbed 3 early rebounds and scored on a put-back as LSU took a 10-4 lead.

LSU did a nice job of keeping the fired up fans from getting into the game as they controlled the boards and the tempo of the game. Augustus scored 4 more points and Erica White made a couple of nice steals as the LSU lead grew to 14-6.
The “Lady Bulldogs” have an All-American of their own in former Gainesville H.S. star Tasha Humphrey, her three-pointer gave her team and the fans a little life. Humphrey’s nemesis is 6-6 LSU center Syliva Fowles, who is just a beast on the boards and she started making her presence felt as she started pounding the glass and altering shots.
LSU took their largest lead of the game when Florence Williams and Augustus scored back-to-back baskets making the score 21-11.
Georgia wasn’t doing a good job of shooting the ball so they started challenging Fowles by taking the ball to the basket. A steal and lay-up by former GAC H.S. star Sherill Baker spearheaded the “Lady Bulldogs” run. Two free-throws by Megan Darrah (a East Coweta H.S. star) cut the lead to 25-18 with 4:12 left in the half.

Humphrey and Darrah both drilled three-pointers before the end of the half and Georgia went into the locker room trailing by one, 31-30.
With the crowd on hand still fired up after Georgia’s run at the end of the half, Humphrey sent them into a frenzy when she started the 2nd half by drilling a three-pointer that give the “Lady Bulldogs” their first lead of the game 33-31.
But then LSU’s Scholanda Hoston made two bigtime plays, scoring on a lay-up and then stealing the ball for another basket as the “Lady Tigers” regained the lead 35-33. Fowles started controlling the paint scoring twice and just like that LSU had built up a 41-33 lead.
Cori Chambers who had been quiet most of the game started to find her touch, her three-pointer with 9:54 to play cut LSU’s lead to 46-44. A few moments later Humphrey brought the UGA faithful to their feet as she busted another three to give the “Lady Bulldogs” back the lead 47-46.

With the house rocking Chambers busted her 2nd three-pointer. Then Sherill “It Takes a Thief” Baker (Baker is one of the SEC’s career leaders in steals) made a big steal and basket to give Georgia their largest lead of the game 56-52 with 6:20 to play.
LSU’s board play really was a big key in the game as Fowles and Augustus started banging the glass hard. Two free-throws by White cut Georgia’s lead to 60-59. With 1:21 left on the clock Augustus was fouled, she canned 2 free-throws as LSU regained the lead 61-60.
With time running down Alexis Kendrick hit a pair of free-throws and Humphrey scored on a lay-up giving Georgia a 64-63 lead with just :31 seconds to play. With everyone on there feet LSU worked some time off of the clock and with :14 ticks left Augustus drilled a jumper for the lead as the LSU bench went wild. Georgia had one last chance but missed and Fowles grabbed the rebound as LSU came away with a thrilling 65-64 win.
