During the stretch run at the end of the 2005-2006 basketball season, an unexpected beep coming from the eastside appeared on the 4SHOT Hoops radar. After seeing Leslie Phillips in action, I knew exactly why that beep went off.
Phillips is a dynamic player that plays on both ends of the court....effectively. Sweet shot. Pressing D. This young lady is the truth. For some reason, though, I'm hearing she's charged with being a ball hog and having no D. Let's see how she pleads.
Klapp: Who do you consider to be the most influential person in you life?
LP: My mom Debra Brown and my grandma Gladys Hagler!!!
Klapp: Tell me something about you that if you told no one, they would never guess.
LP: I like to write whether its songs or just poetry but I also like to dance!!!
Klapp: How long have you been playing basketball?
LP: Since the age of 7 playing with Upward Basketball Program
Klapp: What drives you as a player?
LP: Motivation and Support from family & friends but most of all the LOVE for the game!!!
Klapp: All money aside, if you could play in the NBA or WNBA, which one would it be and why?
LP: WNBA, I chose this because I'm now playing with the top female players all around! Everybody that steps on the court is GREAT players!!!
Klapp: Who is the toughest player you’ve had to face this year?
LP: I'll have to say the post players that attend Ramsay High School!!! They weren't big in size but they were strong!!!
Klapp: To you, what would make your season a success or failure at this point?
LP: To make it a success I wish we had a stronger inside game, that's where we're lacking the most!!!
Klapp: What are your post-high school plans?
LP: I plan on attending Newberry College in South Carolina with my present teammate LeAnne Watson and majoring in Sports Management/Physical Education!!!
Klapp: How do you prepare for your season?
LP: Since I like to eat I change my eating habits and get a lot more rest than normally!!!
Klapp: What do you think of AAU competition?
LP: It's a lot more competitive than high school ball! It gives you a chance to actually be yourself on the court more than anything!!!
Klapp: What’s your favorite food?
LP: Mostly all pasta!!!
Klapp: What your favorite past time?
LP: Hanging with friends & family, Listening to music, Movies, Anything that's fun!!!
Klapp: What’s in your cd player right now?
LP: A lot of underground music (it's a mix) anything that's crunk right now!!!
Klapp: Nike, Adidas, or Reebok?
LP: "Just Do It" Nike
Klapp: Air One’s or high heels?
LP: Air Force 1's but high heels sometimes!!!
Klapp: Do you have a nickname?
LP: Yea, most friends call me L-Slimm or Smilez but I prefer Smilez becuz Im constantly smiling!!!
Klapp: If you could be anything else besides a ballplayer, what would it be? Why?
LP: An Actress: I like imitating many people for the fun of it lol!!!
Klapp: What do you feel is your greatest attribute on the court?
LP: "I have an eye for the court and my all around defense!"
I can anticipate most passes before the opponent decides to makes them!
Klapp: This one might be kind of tough but.....Name a song title that best describes you. And you have to tell me why.
LP: Betcha Can't Do It Like Me- Dem Franchise Boyz, I chose this song because when your on the court every player has a uniqueness about them that's different from everybody else's, so when I step on the court things I do I know they can't do it like me!!!!
Klapp: What is your greatest basketball moment so far?
LP: Last yr in the state 1st round we where losing to Dalton High real bad and I came back in the 2nd half and hit 5 three's with the help of my teammates encouraging me to keep shooting!!!
Klapp: Most disappointing?
LP: How we went to the Final Four 2yrs in a row and still haven't won the championship, especially when the talent was there!!!
