Leslie Phillips sits down for questioning

"Betcha Can't Do It Like Me"

The Newberry College signee looks to make an impact at the next level.
During the stretch run at the end of the 2005-2006 basketball season, an unexpected beep coming from the eastside appeared on the 4SHOT Hoops radar.  After seeing Leslie Phillips in action, I knew exactly why that beep went off.

Phillips is a dynamic player that plays on both ends of the court....effectively.  Sweet shot.  Pressing D.  This young lady is the truth.  For some reason, though, I'm hearing she's charged with being a ball hog and having no D.  Let's see how she pleads.

Klapp: Who do you consider to be the most influential person in you life?

LP:  My mom Debra Brown and my grandma Gladys Hagler!!!

Klapp: Tell me something about you that if you told no one, they would never guess.

LP:  I like to write whether its songs or just poetry but I also like to dance!!!

Klapp: How long have you been playing basketball?

LP:  Since the age of 7 playing with Upward  Basketball Program

Klapp: What drives you as a player?

LP:  Motivation and Support from family & friends but most of all the LOVE for the game!!!

Klapp: All money aside, if you could play in the NBA or WNBA, which one would it be and why?

LP:  WNBA, I chose this because I'm now playing with the top female players all around! Everybody that steps on the court is GREAT players!!!

Klapp: Who is the toughest player you’ve had to face this year?

LP:  I'll have to say the post players that attend Ramsay High School!!! They weren't big in size but they were strong!!!

Klapp: To you, what would make your season a success or failure at this point?

LP:  To make it a success I wish we had a stronger inside game, that's where we're lacking the most!!!

Klapp: What are your post-high school plans?

LP:  I plan on attending Newberry College in South Carolina with my present teammate LeAnne Watson and majoring in Sports Management/Physical Education!!!

Klapp: How do you prepare for your season?

LP:  Since I like to eat I change my eating habits and get a lot more rest than normally!!!

Klapp: What do you think of AAU competition?

LP:  It's a lot more competitive than high school ball! It gives you a chance to actually be yourself on the court more than anything!!!

Klapp: What’s your favorite food?

LP:  Mostly all pasta!!!

Klapp: What your favorite past time?

LP:  Hanging with friends & family, Listening to music, Movies, Anything that's fun!!!

Klapp: What’s in your cd player right now?

LP:  A lot of underground music (it's a mix) anything that's crunk right now!!!

Klapp: Nike, Adidas, or Reebok?

LP:  "Just Do It" Nike

Klapp: Air One’s or high heels?

LP:  Air Force 1's but high heels sometimes!!!

Klapp:  Do you have a nickname?

LP:  Yea, most friends call me L-Slimm or Smilez but I prefer Smilez becuz Im constantly smiling!!!

Klapp: If you could be anything else besides a ballplayer, what would it be? Why?

LP:  An Actress: I like imitating many people for the fun of it lol!!!

Klapp: What do you feel is your greatest attribute on the court?

LP:  "I have an eye for the court and my all around defense!"

I can anticipate most passes before the opponent decides to makes them!

Klapp: This one might be kind of tough but.....Name a song title that best describes you. And you have to tell me why.

LP:  Betcha Can't Do It Like Me- Dem Franchise Boyz, I chose this song because when your on the court every player has a uniqueness about them that's different from everybody else's, so when I step on the court things I do I know they can't do it like me!!!!

Klapp: What is your greatest basketball moment so far?

LP:  Last yr in the state 1st round we where losing to Dalton High real bad and I came back in the 2nd half and hit 5 three's with the help of my teammates encouraging me to keep shooting!!!

Klapp: Most disappointing?

LP:  How we went to the Final Four 2yrs in a row and still haven't won the championship, especially when the talent was there!!!

Klapp:  Alright, that's it.

LP:  Thanks Klapp

Off the Record:  Leslie keep doing your thing.  Defense is like rare art nowadays and you have a Picasso on your hands.  Go ahead and turn Newberry out!!
