The Southwest Atlanta Christian Warriors versus the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack in the state class 1-A championship, would feature two teams with something in common. Both teams would enter already having state rings, Whitefield in 2003 and SACA in 2004. Tonight’s match up would give one team the opportunity to add one more ring to the mantle. The Warriors would feature McDonald All American and Georgia Tech Signee Javaris Crittenton at the point guard position. The Wolfpack would bring super sophomore Kevin Anderson at their point guard position and things would “quite frankly” (via Stephen A) get right to the point.
Javaris would score the first basket for the Warriors on a lay up to get SACA started. Then came the Wolfpack on a 12-2 run, Anderson would shoot a three-
pointer, followed by a lay up and a jumper for 7 points. Brandon Reed would come off the bench for the Wolfpack and nail a long range three-pointer from the corner to give Whitefield the lead at the end of the first period 21-9.
SACA down by 12 points entering the second period would go Javaris with 2 consecutive baskets follow by a three- pointer from Jahaziel Howard to cut the lead to 4 points with 2:38 left in the half (30-26). Crittenton would then go 1 for 2 from the line to tie the game at the half with 32 points each.
In the fourth period things would get interesting, both teams would battle back in forth in scoring. With 2:57 left in the game, Crittenton would go to the line to hit one free throw and miss the second, which was put back by Danny Friend to tie the game at 62. After the tie it would be all SACA. The Warriors would
score on 3 consecutive fast breaks, Jahaziel would score on a lay up and Crittenton would score 4 points, none more famous than the one Javaris like to broke the rim with a one-handed dunk. Whitefield Kelvin McConnell would nail a three pointer but the damage would be done. Junior Omar Prewitt would score the last bucket on a lay up and SACA would win their second state title in school history. Not since Clinch County in 1987 has the boys and girls team both won state titles.
Congratulations to both teams on a job well done!
