Wesleyan wins 3rd straight Class 2A Crown

LeSeur, Whitney & Whitney Inc., finish on top!

The Macon Coliseum – Macon, GA

Le' Le' LeSeur is bumped by GAC's Courtney Samuels as she drive to the basket.
Carolyn and Elise Whitney hit the Wesleyan campus as freshman and quickly became integrated into the “Lady Wolves” championship tradition. Le’ Le’ LeSure followed suit after her freshman season at Redan High School and won a championship her first year there. Now the trio will leave the Norcross Campus with 3 state Class A Championship rings and they don’t leave the Wesleyan cupboards bare…..could it be 4 in a row for the “Lady Wolves” , I wouldn’t bet against it.

Having already played each other twice this season the teams were already familiar with each other so the only thing left to do was play the game, there was no feeling out process the teams just got after each other.

GAC’s 5-9 Jr.-Julio Stephens and 5-8 Jr.-D’Nay Daniels (a 4SHOT Hoops Elite 50 selection - juniors) provided the early spark for the “Lady Spartans”; Stephens scored 6 points and Daniels had 4 to keep GAC close. Wesleyan countered that getting 9 points from 6-1 Jr.-Sarah Delk (a 4SHOT Hoops Elite 50 selection - juniors). A three-pointer by 5-5 Jr.-Kelly Hall gave the “Lady Wolves” a 17-16 first quarter lead.

GAC's Bria Smith gets Wesleyan's Carolyn Whitney off her feet and goes around her up court.
The action continued to heat up in 2nd quarter as the teams raced up and down the court. With 6-0 Sr.-Le’ Le’ LeSeur (a 4SHOT Hoops Elite 50 selection - seniors) starting to assert herself inside Wesleyan started taking control of the boards. Elise and Carolyn Whitney (4SHOT Hoops Elite 50 selection - seniors) did a nice job of pushing the ball up the court as the “Lady Wolves” started pulling away.

GAC’s 5-7 Jr.-Kiara Swanier (4SHOT Hoops Elite 50 selection - juniors) drilled a three-pointer to help keep the “Lady Spartans” within striking range but Wesleyan countered that with a three-pointer by 5-11 Fr.-Anne Marie Armstrong to give the “Lady Wolves” a 41-31 halftime lead.

Three straight baskets by Le’Le’ LeSeur gave the “Lady Wolves” a 66-48 lead with 5:05 left to play. GAC continued to play hard but it was tough trying to disrupt the flow Wesleyan was in. Head Coach Jan Azar had C. Whitney pull the ball out and run some clock while looking for good shots and it worked justthe way it was drawn out as they score some easy lay-ups.

Elise Whitney prepares to shoot a free-throw while twin Carolyn directes things in the backcourt.
With 3:26 left in the game LeSeur playing in her last game for Wesleyan fouled out to a standing ovation. The 5-11 senior is headed to Bucknell Univ. next season on a basketball scholarship.

The only thing left now was to pull the Whitney twins out so they could receive their ovations for the 4 outstanding years they have put in. That moment happened with less than 1:00 minute to play as the “Lady Wolves” went on to capture their 3rd consecutive Class 2A State Championship. This was their 4th in 5 years having won the Class A title in 2002.
