2006 SEC Tournament

Day 2 – Quarter-Finals

LSU 92 vs. Vanderbilt 73

“Big Baby” rattles the “Commodores” cage!

Gaylord Entertainment Center – Nashville, TN

LSU’s Glen “Big Baby” Davis was a real tiger Friday evening against the home standing Vanderbilt “Commodores” in Day 2 of the SEC Tournament in Nashville. Davis who is built like a baby “Shaq” was all business, ripping Vandy for 28-points and 13-rebounds as LSU rolled to the win.

LSU got points from 4 of 5 starters to take a quick 9-0 lead, forcing Vanderbilt to call a timeout. After the T.O. the “Commodores” returned the favor as 4 of their 5 starters scored. 6-6 So.-Shan Foster hit 3 free-throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt to pull Vanderbilt even at 10-10.

The “Tigers” slowed down the “Commodores” advance getting back-to-back three-pointers from freshmen 6-5 Garrett Temple and 6-7 Tasmin Mitchell to go up 16-10.

Midway through the 1st half Davis went on a tear scoring 8 straight points but the “Tigers” were not able to pull away; a three-pointer by Vandy’s 6-7 Jr.-Derrick Byars pulled them to within four, 24-20. Davis hit 2 free-throws with 7:56 on the clock to make the score 30-23.

Vanderbilt’s shots started coming up short and you could see that they were starting to run out of steam having played a tough game the night before against Auburn. The “Commodores” went 3:00 minutes without scoring. LSU took advantage of their fresh legs as they got the ball off the glass and pushed it up the court, Mitchell’s second three-pointer of the half pushed the lead up to eleven, 39-28 with 2:20 left in the half.

Davis scored 5 more points to finish the half with 19 as the “Tigers” took a 44-30 lead into the locker room.

”Big Baby” came out of the locker room and drilled a three-pointer; then he hit 1 of 2 free-throws as the lead grew to 49-32. Vanderbilt really began to struggle and started falling further and further behind.

With 8:17 to play LSU’s 6-8 Jr.-Darnell Lazare scored back-to-back hoops as the lead reached twenty, 75-55. Vanderbilt would never get closer than 20 points and fell to the “Tigers” 92-73. LSU the No.1 seed out of the SEC-West now advances to play the Florida “Gators” the 2nd seed out of the SEC-East in the semi-finals.
