Mercy me, the “Lady Bobcats” did it!

Burton, Hohenberger and Moore double-up to key the victory

Class A - 2006 Georgia H.S. Track & Field Championships

Hugh Mills Stadium – Albany, GA

Raven Moore (l) edges Kimberly Johnson (r) from Twiggs County in the 100 Meters.
The last 5 girls state Class A Track & Field Championships have been won by the same team out of Fairburn, GA, well this past Saturday in Albany, GA the city of Fairburn extended that streak to 6 straight years, but this year it wasn’t the “Lady War Eagles” from Landmark Christian who had won those 5 championships but instead it was their city rivals from Our Lady of Mercy who shocked the track world by ending the Landmark streak and starting one of their own as they captured the schools first State Track & Field Championship.

The “Lady Bobcats” from Our Lady of Mercy High School showed no mercy in winning the school’s first Track & Field State Championship, besides the team trophy they took home 7 individual titles, 6 between three performers.

Sarah Hohenberger edged defending champ Dorothy Todd at the tape to win the 800 Meters.
Leigh Burton doubled-up in the Long Jump and the 100M Hurdles. Her winning time of 14.98 in the 100M Hurdles bested her time of 15.46 when she won the gold at last years state meet. Sarah Hohenberger won both the 800 (2:20.636) and 1600 Meters (5:17.776). In the 800 Meters Hohenberger knocked off defending champion Dorothy Todd from Athens Academy. For the second year in a row Whitney Bishoff from Athens Christian had to settle for the silver medal in the 1600 Meters.

Moore (5) pulls ahead of Pottinger (4) down the backstretch to complete her 100/200 Meter double.
In the 3200 Meters Bishoff and defending champion Gabbie Pina from Schley County switched the positions they finished in at last years state meet with Bishoff winning the gold medal after crossing the finish line in 1st place with a time of 11:29.208, Pina settled for second and the silver medal.

Raven Moore proved to be the Class A’s fastest young lady by capturing the 100 Meters in a time of 12.34 and then later covered the 200 Meters in 25.60 just edging out Whitefield Academy’s Callie Pottinger. Pottinger did however win a gold medal earlier in the day when she defended her 400 Meter title using those powerful legs to easily win in a time of 56.35.

Hannah Allen added the Discus title as the “Lady Bobcats amassed 84 points. Landmark Christian finished 2nd with 53, Athens Christian was 3rd with 38 and Atlanta International came in 4th with 34 points.

Landmarks winning 4x400 Relay Team (Christian Hunnicutt , Christian McGuire, Heather Hayes and Kelsey Knapp).
Jenkins County’s Ashley Ball finished some unfinished business in the Shot Put by winning the gold medal with a throw of 39’-2.000”, last year Ball finished second in the state meet in the Shot Put. Leah Hampton from Atlanta International won this years Triple Jump gold medal with a jump of 35’-0.500”.

After a 4th place finish last year Landmark Christian’s Heather Hayes returned to win the 300M Hurdles gold medal in a time of 46.127. Teammate Christian McGuire who was in hot pursuit finished second. Cassie Huntley from Atlanta International was another 4th place finisher from last year who returned to capture gold in the High Jump. Her winning jump of 5’-0” was covered by four other competitors but she finished first with fewer attempts.

Huntley’s teammate Laura Geronimo added a gold medal to the silver medal she won in the Pole Vault at last year’s state meet. Geronimo’s vault of 10’-4.000” easily outdistanced the field.

Whitefield Academy's Callie Pottinger easily defended her 400 Meter title.
Commerce’s 4x100M Relay team of Brittany Sewell, Whitney Canup , Ayonsa Sanders, Kaylin Canup and Denea Grant returned and picked up the gold medal by just edging out Landmark Christian in a time of 50.075. N’Dra Huff is the new edition to this years relay team. The same Commerce relay team finished with the silver medal at last years state meet.

In the last event of the Class A state meet Landmark Christian’s 4x400M Relay team of Kelsey Knapp, Heather Hayes, Christian McGuire, hoops star Christian Hunnicutt and Kaity Bulger defended their title winning the gold in a time of 4:00.412. Hayes, McGuire and Bulger were members of last year’s winning relay team.

The anchor-legs from Commerce (l) and Landmark (r) give it all they have as the cross the finishline in the 4x100 relay. Commerce won the race.

Our Lady of Mercy's Leigh Burton doubled-up in the 100M Hurdles and the Long Jump.

The Commerce 4x100 Relay sits on top of the winners stand to receive their gold medals.
