L.A. “Keeping It Real” with Ravven Brown

It was a rough basketball season for the “Lady Raiders” from Riverwood High School this past year but there was a bright spot in the form of 5’-7” freshman point guard Ravven Brown. Brown’s outstanding play this past season played earned her Honorable Mention status on the 4SHOT Hoops All-Freshman team. I caught up with Ravven for a little session of  “Keeping it Real”.

L.A.:  “Who have been some of the most influential people in your life”?

Ravven: “My mom, my older brother Tramaine, and my older cousin Chakeitha.”

L.A.:  “What has been one of the most memorable moments of your freshman season at Riverwood High School this year?
Ravven: “That would have to be the very first high school game when they announced  "The starting point guard number 23, freshman Ravven Brown."

L.A.:  “What moment(s) in your young career would you most like to forget?

Ravven: “Last years AAU state tournament when we (The Pistols) lost to the Celtics by 2 to move on to the championship and I could not play in that game because I was hurt.”

L.A.: What is the strongest part of your game?

Ravven: “My ability to drive to the basket and being a lefty!”

L.A.:   “What do you think you need to work on to take your game to the next level?”

Ravven: “That would be my outside shot, I plan on working on that during AAU season.”

L.A.:  “As a freshman did you expect to come in and make the impact on the team that you did?”

Ravven: “Not really, but after a few games my teammates let me know that I would make a difference for our team.”

L.A.:  “Who has been one of the toughest players you have had to guard and who is the best high school player you personally have ever seen?”

Ravven: “I can't think of any tough players I have had to guard. There are a lot of good players but these are the best I've seen Chakeitha Weldon, Shaday Woodlock, and Nikitta Gartrell.”

L.A.:  “Watching Riverwood play this season it appeared to me as if you were the go to person you also ran the point. How difficult was it being so young having to give orders on the floor and sometimes having to just take over a game?”

Ravven: “It was very difficult because I felt like I was just a freshman and new,  but after losing some games I knew I had to step up.”

L.A.: “Tell me something about yourself that people wouldn’t know by just looking at you?

Ravven: “I'm a daddy's girl. He spoils me!”

L.A.: “Do you have a nickname?”

Ravven: “Yeah, Ray or Ray Ray”

L.A.: “How does summer ball (AAU) differ from the regular season?”

Ravven: “AAU ball you have teams were the whole team can be a threat and not just the starting 5. School ball if you defend 2 or 3 players well, than that might shut down the whole team. AAU is for the real ballers!”

L.A.: “Most AAU Teams have players that play in their natural position unlike in high school where you usually play out of position. During AAU season you also play at the point, is that the position you like to play or would you rather play the 2?”

Ravven: “In AAU I play the 2 or 3.  I like those positions better than the 1.”

Riverwood H.S. freshman Raven Brown.
L.A.: “Are you a Player or a BALLER, now at 4SHOT we think Players just go out on the court and play like every other player on the court. Now a BALLER can take over the game, not in a selfish way but they can dominate at “a whole nother’ level?”

Ravven: “I'm a BALLER baby!!”

L.A.:  “If you could meet anyone in the world (past or present) who would it be and why?

Ravven: “James Naismith because he invented the game that I love.”

L.A.: “If you were not playing basketball what would you be doing now?”
Ravven: “Sleeping!! just playing, I would probably be playing another sport or making somebody laugh.”

L.A.:
“Your so young and probable don’t have your learners permit yet but I still want you to describe the kind of ride you would like to have (example a Chevy with “22’s etc…), whatever car you would like?”
Ravven: “I'm not that young, I get my permit later on this year! I would take any old school Cadillac!”

L.A.: “What is your favorite TV Show and Movie?”
Ravven: “My favorite TV show is Family Guy and my favorite movies are Love & Basketball and The Jackson 5 movie.”

L.A.: “What type of music do you like and do you have a favorite artist or group?”

Ravven: “I listen to everything except rock. My favorite group is The Jackson 5. I’m an old school kinda girl!”

L.A.:   “What type of sneakers do you like to sport?”

Ravven: “Air Forces, Timberlands, and Jordans”

L.A.:   “What type of cloths do you like to wear?”

Ravven: “PEPE Jeans and Lady Enyce”

L.A:  “What’s your favorite food?”
Ravven: “Cereal, you don’t know nothin about them Lucky Charms !”

L.A.:  “Who’s your favorite player?”
Ravven: “Rip Hamilton, Detroit Pistons“

L.A.:  “Who’s your favorite team?”
Ravven: “Tennessee Lady Vols”

L.A.: “What type of hobbies do you have?”
Ravven: “Drawing, making people laugh, skating, and eating”

L.A.:Ravven:, thank you for your time, it has been my pleasure to be able to “Keep It Real” with you.”
Ravven: “Thank You”
