St. Pius ends Tucker jinx!

“Golden Lions” ground out victory

St. Pius Stadium - Atlanta, GA

St. Pius QB-Dylan Knight did a nice job of running the veer. Here he hands off to FB-Tyler Fisher.
The “Golden Lions” from St. Pius entered the game against Tucker having loss the last 4 times they have met, being outscored 116 - 41. So they knew going in that trying to out score the “Tigers” was not a good formula for victory. So the game plan, control the ball and the clock with QB-Dylan Knight, FB-Tyler Fisher, WB-Jonathan Tinsley and WB-Will Asip which they did and broke the “Tigers” the 4 game winning streak.

Right from the start you knew St. Pius was looking to keep Tucker’s high powered offense on the sidelines by controlling the ball and the clock with a solid ground attack. With FB-Tyler Fisher and WB-Jonathan Tinsley picking up some tough yards the “Golden Lions” steadily moved down the field eating up yards and the clock.

An 11-yard run by Tinsley gave St. Pius a first-down on the Tucker 37-yard line. The “Golden Lions” would move the ball to the 25-yard line before the “Tigers” defense led by DE-Marcus Clark, LB-Raymond Ellis, DL-Corey Billings and DB-Jamoris Slaughter stiffened forcing St. Pius to go for a 39-yard field that just missed to the right. St. Pius ate up over 7:00 minutes on the drive.

Tucker DB-Neiko Lipscomb makes a picture perfect interception in front of WR-Evan Ferrell.
When Tucker got the ball you saw why St. Pius wanted to eat up as much time as possible because the “Tigers” went into their bag of tricks as QB-Chris Simpson hit WR-Derrick Harris with a swing pass and Harris in turn went deep to WR-Neiko Lipscomb, who had gotten behind the defense for 80-yards and a touchdown. The PAT by K-Ricky Peacock made the score 7-0.

With time running down in the quarter St. Pius was marching again but Fisher fumbled and Slaughter recovered it for Tucker on the St. Pius 32-yard line. The “Tigers” converted a forth down when Simpson hit Lipscomb at the 20-yard line.

Just when it looked like Tucker was going to put more points on the board they turned the ball over on a bad pitch that was recovered by St. Pius DB-Joey Flint as the quarter came to a close.

With 1:18 left in the half St. Pius was on the move again but then Lipscomb made a text-book interception of a Knight pass at their 9-yard line.

With a slight chance of getting the ball back if they kept the “Tigers” pinned up the “Golden Lions” defense led by DL-Javod Sewell, WB/LB-Jonathan Tinsley, DL-Shawn O’Toole and LB-Peter Schiller did just that forcing Tucker to punt with less than :10 seconds on the clock.

St. Pius WB-Jonathan Tinsley tries to split Tucker defenders Derrick Harris (5) and Tristan Carter (45).
On the punt St. Pius called for a fair-catch at the Tucker 27-yard line. Because they called for the fair-catch they had the option of a free kick and opted for a 43-yard field goal attempt by K-Chris Philpot, who without any pass rush to deal with drilled it; cutting the Tucker lead to 7-3 as the half came to a close.

The 2nd half was all defense, that is until St. Pius got a big 27-yard touchdown run from Fisher which would prove to be the margin of victory as the “Golden Lions” ended a four game loosing streak to Tucker. The win keeps St. Pius perfect on the season at 4-0 while Tucker falls to 4-1.

The Final Score: St. Pius 10 - Tucker 7
