Dublin manhandles Lovett

Irish light up the scoreboard on the ground

Dublin vs. Lovett

Georgia Dome – Atlanta, Georgia

Well, one would tend to think that any team playing in the semifinals, in the dome for a shot at a state championship would at least show up.  As the Dublin Fighting Irish prepared to face the Lovett Lions, from appearances, both teams looked good.  It looked like we might have a battle on our hands.  But as the great L.A. said, “Looks can be deceiving, Klapp.”

Dublin got the party started early as running back Jamon Morris set the scoring off on a 24-yard touchdown strike from quarterback, Ben Cochran.  Soon, his backfield mates followed suit.  Brian Wilcher and Thomas Barnes joined the touchdown-fest and Morris added one more on the ground on a 45-yard scamper.

Dublin’s defense had no trouble with the Lions, holding them to under 100 total yards on the day.  Lovett did score on a one yard dive by West Barnwell.  It was even in the first half.  But by then, it was already 28-0.  Dublin was just way too much for the Lions.  At the half, the Irish were up 41-7.

The start of the 3rd quarter posed a dilemma for Lovett coach, Mike Muschamp.  You see, in high school in the state of Georgia, once you are down by 30 points, the Mercy Rule goes into effect.  But the coach has that option.  To start off the half, Muschamp wanted his kids to play.  By the end of third and with score 62-7, Lovett had no choice.  It was a running clock the rest of the way.

Dublin will face a tougher matchup next week in the championship game, but they had a good time in the Dome.  Unfortunately for Lovett, it was at their expense.

Final Score:  Dublin 65 – Lovett 7
