Morehouse dominates in season closer

Golden Bears put up little fight in falling to Tigers

B. T. Harvey Stadium – Atlanta, GA

Sr. Kelvin Moore finished with 22 carries for 159 yards
In the last game of the 2007 season against Miles College, the Maroon Tigers of Morehouse had a few things to play for.  Not only was it Parents’ Day, but it was also an opportunity to close out the year with seven wins, the most for Morehouse since the 2001 season.

And there was this little thing called “get back”.  Miles manhandled Morehouse last year to the tune of 38-9, a victory they would later forfeit, and that score still stings.

Morehouse jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind the leg of Micah Streiff on a 42-yard field goal.  They would soon add to that lead with a 54-yard strike from Christian Sterling to Achille Hendje.

Miles would answer before the half with a nice grab on a fade route by Derrick Hector.  Decatur native, Ellis George placed the ball where only the 6’6” Hector could reach it.  But that would be all the highlights for George and the Golden Bears.  The Maroon Tigers went into the half with a slim three point margin which could have been a lot more if it were not for some sloppy play, miscues, penalties, and turnovers.

But the Morehouse defense held down the fort whenever the offense slipped up.  For the rest of day, George was on his horse.  On every snap, it seemed as if Jeffrey Cargile, Earl “Tiger” Thomas, Mario Lane, or any other Morehouse defender was camped out in the Golden Bear backfield.

In fact, it was the defense that sealed the deal when Thomas scooped up a fumble and returned it 29 yards for a score to put the Morehouse up 17-7 early in the third quarter.

With 7:00 left in the game, Morehouse added one more score just for good measure when backup quarterback, Carlos King, scored on a hand-off-pitch-back-option sort of play from eight yards out.  Senior Kelvin Moore also shined in his final game as a Tiger as he finished with 159 yards on 22 carries.

The Maroon Tigers definitely mixed business with pleasure in this win.  From the sideline chatter to the band antics, it was clear that Miles College was just a mere technicality for the Maroon Tigers.
