2008 Alabama Class 5A Championship Game (Girls)

Eufaula vs. Talladega

Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center – Birmingham, AL

Eufaula tops Talladega to capture 5A title

Condrey named MVP after dropping 30

Condrey takes the ball strong to the hole against Merritt.
Birmingham, AL - Eufaula’s Terran Condrey (a Univ. of Baylor signee) dosen’t do much talking at all on the court, for that matter I doubt if she does a whole lot off the court either. She appears to be the type of young lady that lets her actions do the talking for her and I think her teammates and school mates follow her lead.

Well her actions spoke loud and clear Friday evening when she scored 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Lady Tigers from Eufaula High School to an exciting 64-53 win over the Lady Tigers from Talladega to capture the Class 5A State Championship.

Things didn’t start off so well for Eufaula as the fell behind quickly, Talladega’s Jessica Merritt however got off to a great start scoring 6 early points to give her team a 13-6 lead.

Write down the name Marla McAbee, who is she you say? she is a 5-8 sophomore who plays for Talladega and she is relentless inside. She scored twice on a couple of strong moves inside as Talladega upped their lead to 15-6.

Eufaula finally realized that they were playing in the state finals and started ballin. Brianne White scored on a lay-up and Condrey scored twice to cut the Talladega lead to 15-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Merritt who started hot went just as cold in the second quarter and so did the rest of her teammates as they managed to score only 6-second quarter points. A three-pointer by Eufaula’s Gaige Porter gave the Lady E-Tigers their first lead of the game 18-17. Condrey would stick two more jumpers before time ran out to give Eufaula a 24-21 lead heading into the half.

A fastbreak basket by White pushed the Eufaula lead up to five, 26-21 as the third quarter got underway. Condrey, who is the real-deal continued to lead her team as she grabbed a rebound and pushed the ball up the floor to make a sweet assist to teammate Raven Brown as they increased their lead to 29-23.

McAbee continued to show why she is going to be an all-star caliber player with a rebound put-back to help start a mini run that but Talladega right back in the game. With 3:03 left in the third quarter Talladega trailed by only two, 29-27.

After a long scoring drought Merritt finally hit another basket and McAbee scored again to cut the lead to 34-33 but as time was running out in the quarter Condrey hit a running jumper to make it 36-33.

As the forth quarter got underway it was obvious that Condrey could score whenever she wanted to as she scored 5 quick points to give Eufaula a 43-35 lead forcing Talladega Head Coach Jannie Keith to call a timeout.

Eufaula's Brianne White is fouled as she takes the ball strong to the basket.
A basket by Merritt and two hoops by Jameica Rivers cut the lead to 44-41 but once again it was Condrey to the rescue as she responded with another basket as the action and the fan participation heated up.

For the next couple of minutes the teams traded baskets back and forth, Rivers hit another jumper, then Condrey responded, Merritt scored and Condrey again responded.

With time now a factor Eufaula started working the clock on each possession, while Talladega started jacking up missed three-point attempts. Down the stretch Eufaula Head Coach Ricky Butler put the ball in the hands of Condrey and she responded hitting 3 of 4 free-throws. Porter, who gave the Lady E-Tigers a big boost, also hit some big free-throws as Eufaula went on to capture the girls Class 5A State Championship.

Condrey was the obvious choice for MVP honors after posting a 30-11 double-double. She was also named to the all-tournament team along with teammate Brianne White. Merrit and McAbee from Talladega were also named to the team.

The Final Score: Eufaula 64 – Talladega 53

Terran Condrey dropped 30 and grabbed 11 boards to be named the tournament's MVP.

Condrey was named to the all-tournament team along with teammate Brianne White. Merrit and McAbee from Talladega were also named to the team.
