Class A Finals

Terrell Co vs. Calvary Day

Macon Centreplex – Macon, GA

Cavaliers upend Terrell Co to win girls state Class A title

Katie Covington lights up the nets for 26 pts

Simply put, that is why you play the game!  Records, stats and emotion are not what win state championships. The Lady Cavaliers from Calvary Day proved just that point as they upset No. 1 ranked Terrell Co Lady Greenwave 57-48 to take the Class a state title.

Terrell Co came into this match-up with probably Class A’s best player in the incomparable Monshay Thomas.  Calvary Day itself has a very fine player in the versatile swing player Katie Covington.  But this was not a day for just these two young ladies but there were a few others who would take their turn when the light shined on them.

The game started off in typical fashion with both teams playing close to the vest as Terrell Co showed off there superior rebounding advantage with Shayla Jester and Timnah Hendry controlling the paint with big time rebounds and put backs.

Calvary Day showed their style as well with all-star Katie Covington and Natalie Paris leading the way with some beautiful jump shooting.

As the second period rolled around it was very evident that Calvary Day was going to extend the floor and use their superior shooting to their advantage.  Terrell Co on the other hand was going to ride with there superstar Monshay Thomas as she showed the whole package with the short jumper, the drive and of course hitting one from downtown to go into halftime with slim 24-20 lead.

The second half of this game was one for the ages as Calvary Day showed off there cold hearted shooting touch as senior Natalie Paris put on a show with four second half treys.  The biggest may have been the one that she hit with 2:31 remaining as she launched one from well behind the three-point line.  With Paris hitting those bombs, that allowed Calvary’s Covington to roam around the court and use her court savvy to get open looks to the hole as well as some nice jumpers.  Calvary Day’s Sarah Hewett was very instrumental with her second half play as she hit some big free throws throughout the 4th period.

Monshay Thomas of the Lady Greenwave ended her illustrious career with a team high 23 points.  Calvary Day’s Katie Covington was the game high scorer with 26 pts of which 17 were scored in the second half.  Natalie Paris five 3’s for the Lady Cavaliers were big time.

Terrell Co. had its chances but could not hit any big shots.  That feat was left up to the Calvary Day Cavalier’s as they hit shot after shot.

Remember how we opened up this story, this is why you play the game!  The favorite is the TEAM THAT WINS THE STATE TITLE!  Congratulations Calvary Day on a great championship season!

Calvary Day: Katie Covington 26; Natalie Paris 17; Sarah Hewett 8; Sonny Canady 4; Anna Moody 2.
