Scales 3 TD’s leads the way
North DeKalb Stadium – Chamblee, GA

| Dunwoody RB-Treaver Scales scored three touchdowns in the win. |
Chamblee – For the opening game of the year you would think that the defenses would have dominated the game but on this hot evening it was the defenses that were wilting under the hot pressure from both team’s offenses. Dunwoody running back Treaver Scales didn’t appear to be bothered by the heat or the Griffin defense; the 5-10, 190lb senior ran through the Bears defense for over 100-yards and three touchdowns to lead the Wildcats to their mild upset over the Class 4A’s pre-season No. 1 ranked team.
Scales who rushed for over 600-yards last season in just 7 games actually got off to a slow start fumbling the ball on the Wildcats first possession; Griffin’s DB-Donte Morris recovered the ball giving the Bears excellent field position near midfield.
Griffin went into their bag of tricks early faking a punt on forth down and six, WB-Rodnekus Lindsey took the snap instead and ran 10-yards to the Dunwoody 49-yard line for the first down. From there it was the running of D.J. Morgan that carried the Bears. The junior running back would score on a short 5-yard scamper to put Griffin up. Kicker Wesley Morris booted the PAT to make it 7-0.

Dunwoody would come right back mixing up their drive with dives and counters to Scales and RB-Will Crochet. After penalties against both teams the Wildcats proceed to put the in the endzone on an 8-yard touchdown run by Scales. The PAT by kicker Austin Breed tied the came at 7-7 with 4:40 left in the first-quarter.
With less than a minute gone off of the clock Griffin struck again when quarterback Marcus Waller connected with wingback Buck Hancock for 76-yards and a touchdown. Morris’s PAT put the Bears up 14-7. Undaunted Dunwoody marched right back, quarterback Erick Cooper hit WR-Andy Mills with a screen pass that he turned into a 24-yard gain out to the 44-yard line as the first-quarter came to an end.
On the first play of the second-quarter RB-LeFloyd Phillips busted loose for 24-yard to the Griffin twelve. A tough run by Crochet picked up 11-yards to make if first and goal but a penalty against the Wildcats pushed them back. A few plays later Scales would score his second touchdown of the game. Breed’s PAT tied the game at 14-14.

| Griffin WR-Buck Hancock grabbed 2 touchdown passes in the game. |
An interception by Dunwoody’s Andy Mills was returned 17-yards giving the Wildcats great field position on the Griffin 23-yard line. Scales cleaned up from their breaking loose for a 23-yard touchdown run, his third of the game. Breed’s PAT made it 21-14. The Wildcats would score again before the half on an 18-yard run by RB-Dalen Claytor but a penalty wiped out the play and the Wildcats would end up having to settle on a 21-14-halftime lead.
It was so hot that at the half both teams dressed down and loaded up on the Vitamin Water and Gatoraide; even the cheerleaders were exhausted from the heat.
The third-quarter started with an explosion as both teams returned their kickoffs for touchdowns. Griffin received the third-quarter kickoff and Denarius Appling raced 90-yards for the touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff Dunwoody’s Derek Epperson returned the favor racing 65-yards for the score. Breed’s PAT made the score 28-21.
Lightning struck again for Dunwoody a few minutes later when LB-Blake Adams scooped up a fumble and rambled 40-yards for the touchdown, giving the Wildcats a 35-21 lead.
Seemingly with the game under control the Wildcats appeared to get a little complacent much to the displeasure of Head Coach James Teter who called a timeout to try and set things straight. So what happened after the timeout must have really ticked off Coach Teter because his defense had Waller in their grasp but the elusive Griffin signal caller escaped and found Hancock behind the secondary for 26-yards and a touchdown that closed the gap to 35-27. The Bears miss the PAT.

Early in the forth-quarter Dunwoody increased their lead to eleven, 38-27 on a 29-yard field goal by Breed. On the ensuing kick-off Appling from Griffin fumbled and the Wildcat’s Breon Issac recovered the ball on the Bears side of midfield. Griffin’s defense stiffened and forced a short field-goal attempt that Breed drilled to up the lead to 41-27 with 8:35 left to play.
With 6:32 on the clock Waller hit wide-out Grey Worthy who went high between two defenders to snag the pass for a 28-yard touchdown to pull Griffin to within seven, 41-34 with 4:28 remaining.
The Bears had one last chance to tie the game but those hopes were dashed when Dalen Claytor who also plays running back intercepted Waller at mid-field. With no timeouts remaining Griffin had to watch as the Wildcats ran out the clock.
The Final Score: Dunwoody 41 – Griffin 34.
