Grady “Grey Knights” vs. Maynard Jackson “Jaguars”

Grady rolls Maynard Jackson

Name change can’t help Southside

Lakewood Stadium – Atlanta, GA

Grady running back Keenan Gibson takes a break after rushing for 122-yards and a touchdown.
Atlanta – The Grey Knights from Grady H.S. under the direction of Head Coach Ronnie Millen opened the 2008 football season with a sound 41-13 win over the Southside “Lasers”, oh I mean the Maynard Jackson H.S. “Jaguars”. Southside H.S. was renamed to Maynard Jackson High School, that’s going to take some getting use to because the school colors are still the same.

Early on it looked like the name change kind of gave the Jaguars a little bit of extra incentive as the battled Grady. At the end of the first-quarter they only trailed 14-7. Running back Darius Hawkins and WR-Damian Swann scored Grady’s touchdowns.

Maynard Jackson's Miron McClain returned a kick-off 75-yards for a touchdown.
Grady’s talent and depth started taking its toll on the Jaguars in the second-quarter, Keenan Gibson the Grey Knights elusive tailback and punt-returner scored to put Grady up 22-7 heading into the half. Gibson would finish the game with 122 rushing yards.

Early in the third-quarter Maynard Jackson DB-Oscar Sims had another chance to intercept a Grady pass but jut like before the half the ball hit him in the hands and he dropped it; that’s why athletic players with no-hands play cornerback instead of wide receiver.

The drop would come back to haunt Sims a few plays later when Grady quarterback Treveon Albert burned Sims hitting WR-Rodney Holloway on a 39-yard touchdown pass to make the score 28-7. The PAT was no good.

Grady's WR-Rodney Holloway burned DB-Oscar Sims on this 39-yard touchdown pass.
On the ensuing kick-off Grady’s Desmond Morris recovered a fumble by the Jaguars return-man Miron McClain on the Jaguars 25-yard line. Grady took advantage of the turnover when reserve quarterback Rio McWhorter hit FB-Charles Morgan with a swing pass that he took 16-yards for the touchdown increasing Grady’s lead to 34-7. One sure correction that Grady is going to have make is on their extra point tries, once again the kick was no good.

In the forth-quarter Grady was able to play several of their reserves. Jemario Bryant a reserve running back finished off the scoring for the Grey Knights on a short touchdown run.

Maynard Jackson’s Miron McLain made up for an early fumble by returning a kick-off 75-yards for a touchdown. McLain dove into the endzone and was called for a penalty; hey down by a big score like they were I would have done the same thing….do your thing Miron.

The Final Score: Grady 41 – Maynard Jackson 13
