McNair “Mustangs” vs. M.L. King “Lions”

Lions hold off Mustangs stampede

Myers, Brown and Walker put on a show

Panthersville Stadium – Decatur, GA

Mack Brown ran like a Mac Truck running over anyone that got in his way.
Decatur, GA – M.L. King tailback Mack Brown (a Redan H.S. transfer) and McNair tailback Anthony Walker are two of the best backs that I have seen this season and Friday night in front of a packed house at Panthersville Stadium they both showed why; but at the end of the day it was the running of M.L. King quarterback Carmon Myers that stole the show to give the Lions a hard fought victory over the Mustangs.

For a minute it looked as if Coach Corey Jarvis’ wounded M.L. King Lions were going to blow the McNair Mustangs right off the field. The Lions received the opening kick-off and proceeded to march right down the field. A pass from QB-Carmon Myers to WR-Corey Phillips picked up a first down out over their forty-yard line. A couple of plays later RB-Mack Brown busted loose for 44-yards and a touchdown. One the run Brown dragged McNair defensive back William Howard 10-yards into the endzone. The PAT by Benjamin Walker made the score 7-0.

I though that McNair made a mistake on their first possession when they attempted to convert a forth down and two from their own thirty-four yard line, well the M.L. King defense wasn’t going for it. Led by LB-Joel Knight, DL-Marquis Berry, DL-Kendrick Ham, DE-Fred Allen and DL-Dustin Lane they plugged up the middle and stopped the Mustangs quarterback Zaquian Lawrence cold in his tracks.

McNair's RB-Anthony Walker had a big day scoring 3 touchdowns.
With the ball sitting on the McNair thirty-four Brown ripped off 14-yards to the McNair twenty. A holding call caged up the Lions for a moment until Myers picked up 20-yards and a first and goal from the nine. Myers would finish off the drive a few plays later on a quarterback sneak. Walkers PAT made it 14-0.

On the first play of the second quarter a bad snap over the head of the M.L. King punter gave McNair great field position on the Lions six-yard line. McNair’s RB-Anthony Walker would score the touchdown a few plays later to put the Mustangs right back in the game. The PAT by kicker Brandon Denson made the score 14-7.

To say that Coach Jarvis was unhappy with the play of his team in the second quarter is an understatement as he paced the sideline watching their 14-0 lead disappear.

McNair’s “Red Heat” defense led by LB-Thomas Allen, LB-Tim Boswell, DB-Melvin Huntley, DB-Daquavious Hickson and DL-Martez Tate did a great job in the second quarter of slowing down the runaway Panthers express.

M.L. King QB-Cameron Myers fakes the option to FB-Thomas Hendrickson.
A fumble recovery by Huntley gave McNair good field position in Lion territory but two big plays by the M.L. King defensive, a sack by Allen then an interception by Cofield ended the McNair threat on the twenty-yard line. The Lions quickly took advantage of the turnover when Myers took off for 68-yards and a touchdown but as ESPN College Football Analysis Lee Corso always says “Hold on”, because the play was wiped out on a Lions holding call.

The Lions quickly recovered on runs by Meyers and Brown putting them in field goal position with time running out in the half. Kicker Benjamin Walker came on and drilled a 28-yard field goal to give M.L. King a 17-7 lead heading into the half.

McNair received the second half kick-off and immediately opened the corral gates to let Walker run wild and run he did. On the first play from scrimmage he ripped off 70-yards to the M.L. King six-yard line. Walker would finish off the drive with his second touchdown of the game. Denson’s PAT made it 17-14 as the McNair fans went wild.

McNair's DB-Melvin Huntley recovered a fumble and intercepted a pass in the game.
By now Coach Jarvis is smoking, you hear me smoking with what he was seeing out of his Lions. Now to add fuel to the fire on the Lions next offensive series they had a long touchdown run by Joel Knight wiped out by another penalty.

With the momentum clearly now on the side of McNair, Lawrence hit WR-Quinntavous Graham for a big pick-up of 24-yards and a first down on the Lions forty-three yard line. The drive stalled and the Mustangs turned the ball over on downs.

McNair’s Melvin Huntley made his second big defensive play of the game when he picked off a M.L. King pass and returned it to the Lions seventeen-yard line as the third-quarter came to an end.

A pass interference call on the Lions Rodney Cofield gave McNair a big first down as the forth quarter got underway. Walker finished off the drive with a short touchdown run, his third of the game to give McNair their first lead of the game. Denson’s PAT made the score 21-17.

M.L. king's Rodney Cofield made this tough diving interception.
Trailing by four the Lions big game experience kicked in as they marched right back down the field. Myers who had been running the option with a lot off success all-night did it one more time as he busted loose for 53-yards and the game winning touchdown.

Myers finished the game with 140 yards rushing, Brown added an additional 169 yard for M.L. King.  Walker rushed for 138 yards and added three touchdowns.

The Final Score: M.L. King 23 – McNair 21
