"Questionable calls aid Stephenson"
James R. Hallford Stadium - Clarkston, GA

Stephenson' RB-Raymond Snaders rushes through a gapping hole for a touchdown.
Clarkston, GA - The Newton Rams (1-3 overall, 0-1 Region-2-AAAAA) were invited to a home cooked meal compliments of the black and white striped clad chefs at the James R. Hallford Stadium Friday afternoon losing 25-7 to the Stephenson Jaguars (4-0, 1-0) in a penalty-riddled region contest.

The meal began with a blatant miss-call on the Jaguars opening possession when the Rams held Stephenson to three-and-out.

The Jaguars had to punt on fourth-and-11 from the Newton 45 giving the ball back to Newton at the Ram 4-yard line.

The punt was called back resulting in a 12-minute sideline discussion between the referees and Newton head coach Nick Collins who had questions concerning the call.

Once the sideline meeting came to an end, the call was adjusted and Newton was charged with two consecutive penalties including a call for too many men on the field.

The ball should have been spotted on the 45, but the black-and-white stripers spotted the ball at the 40.

The officials ruled that the Rams had 12 men on the field during an offensive unit change.

Newton Head Coach Nick Collins talks to the officals after a questionable call.
"They came over to the side to count people while we were in the process of changing offensive and defensive units, Collins said. They were counting people who were coming on the field for offense and spotted the ball at the 40."

Seven plays later Newton’s Jaquan Dorsey fumbled deep in Rams’ territory and Stephenson got into the end zone on a nine-yard touchdown run by Raymond Sanders. The extra point was good and Stephenson took a 7-0 lead with 1:30 left in the first period.

The penalties kept coming Newton’s way with Stephenson ending up at the Newton 19-yard line where Jordan Tarver booted a 29-yard field goal increasing the Jaguar lead 10-0 with 10:24 left in the second quarter.

Stephenson kicked to Newton, but quarterback Demetrius McCray fumbled in the end zone with Stephenson’s Tyrone Cornelius falling on the loose ball to give the Jaguars a 12-0 lead with 9:09 left in the first half.

Stephenson gathered in the free kick at their 25-yard line and moved the ball to the Newton 43 on a 50-yard spurt by Sanders to give the Jaguars a first down at the Ram 25.

Newton held the Jaguars, but an 80-yard jaguar punt return for a touchdown by Jonathan Blackley put Stephenson out front 18-0 after a missed PAT to end the half.

Newton defensive linemen DeVario Parker let's Stephenson know he came to play after making a big stop.
Newton received the kick off at their 19-yqrd line to start the second half but couldn’t advance the ball going three-and-out.

The third period was full of penalties 10 penalties along with a lot of frustrated pushing and shoving causing Collins to pull his team to the side to let emotions cool down.

Laundry continued to flood the playing field on Stephenson’s opening possession of the fourth period with three consecutive calls going against the visiting Rams.

Stephenson scored their final touchdown of the game on a 33-yard punt return by Jonathan Blackley and the Jags led 25-0 with 3:25 left to play.

The only bright spot for the Rams came in the final minute of the game when Akeem Hunt took a reverse from scrimmage 80 yards down the left side of the field for a touchdown with 1:04 remaining on the clock.

The game ended with Stephenson getting the victory by the score of 25-7.

"We came out in the second half, and we showed some fight, Collins said. That’s the thing I talked about at the half. We’re young, but we can’t give up, we’ve got to be able to come back and keep fighting until the very end."
