The 2008 high school football season has come to the midway point with some big surprises and tight region races.
However, Region-5A is playing out as expected with Lowndes County (7-0 overall, 4-0 in Region-5 ) sitting at the top with their last victim being cross-town rival Valdosta in a 14-7 win.
Wasted, Macon (7-0 overall, in Region-4A) is on top in Region-4A continuing their dominance with a 27-7 victory over Harris County. The Seminoles are averaging 46 points per game while their defense has only allowed a little more than six per game while pitching two shutouts.
Crisp County (6-1 overall, 4-0 in Region-3A) leads the way in Region-3A which could be considered one of the weakest regions in the state.
Fitzgerald (6-0, 3-0 in Region-2A)

| MlK's Cory Phillips make big plays. |
Turner County (6-1 overall, 3-0 in Region-1A) leads their region adding a win in their last game with a narrow 28-22 escape against Telfair County. The Purple Hurricanes’ defense has managed two shutouts this season in route to their first place seating in the region.
The surprise of the season comes by way of the Eastside Eagles (5-1 overall, 2-1 in Region-8-AAA) who sits atop Region-8-AAA by beating a Stephens County Indian (4-2 overall, 2-1 in Region-8-AAA) team handedly by a score of 38-14, but lost to Hart County (3-2 overall, 2-1 in Region-8-AAA) 24-7 in their last outing.
However, midway through the season, Emanuel County Institute (5-1) holds down the top spot in the state with Lincoln County (5-1), Wilcox County (6-0), Athens Academy (6-0), Clinch County (6-1), Brookstone (6-0), Bowdon (6-0), Bremen (5-1), Johnson County (7-0) and Washington-Wilkes (4-2) rounding out the top 10 teams in the state.
So far this season I’ve had a chance to witness a few dynamic play makes in my travels around the different regions.
The next half of the 2008 high school football season should be very interesting. Get out and catch a few of your favorite teams in action on Friday nights. Of course you can keep up with the teams around the state via 4SHOT Sports on the World Wide Web or e-mail me at erwallace@bellsouth.net.
