Washington Report: Page 3 “The Overlooked.”
Theirs always a team that get all of the hype and the hoopla that comes along with being the best team in the world, country, state, etc… But what happens to the small teams that go undefeated or achieve just as much as the big programs. Is it fair that these teams are overlooked or considered less important?
So I asked myself. What’s going on in Butts County Georgia? In particular the Jackson High School undefeated “Red Devils” football team. The small town that sits south of Atlanta and north of Macon with the population of 23,759, takes pride in their Red Devil football team. The atmosphere on a Friday night consists of tailgating, barbeque, screaming fans and some hard hitting football.
What makes the Red Devils so special? Well, they are currently 8-0 and head coach Mike Parris is looking to take the team deep into the playoff race. The Red Devils are making a huge turn around from last year 3-7 record behind the arm of Junior QB Matt Cawthan and the feet of Junior RB Quint Mckibben. Mckibben averaging 130 yards a game 23.5 carries 2 touchdowns and Cawthan is averaging 127 passing 1 touchdown a game.
A lot of time, teams in small towns fall under the rule out of site out of mind. Is it their fault? Of course not, that’s just the way the cookie crumbles. What can a team do to get the recognition they deserve? Just keep on playing your best, working hard, believe and the bottom shall rise to the top. No matter what, continue to shoot for the moon and if you fall short and catch a star, it’s more than what you had if you didn’t try at all.
Until next time, remember. It’s not my report, it’s Washington's Report.
This is an open page: let me hear from you. Tell me why you think some teams get overlooked? Are their any teams in your area that fits this category? If so shout them out. kutwashington@yahoo.com

There are a few reasons why "small" schools or lesser known schools get less recognition. For one, no one is looking for them. You will always have your perennial powerhouses that people will check for, even if they're having a bad year. Two, competition. In a lot of cases, and no disrespect intended, smaller schools play teams with lesser talent levels. So if you're 8-0 against eight weak teams, should you still be touted as the best in the state, country, or what have you? No. College football is the best example to give. You're going to have your "BCS Busters" because they are playing in weaker conferences, and therefore, playing weaker competition. Georgia, LSU, Florida, USC, etc., will never be BCS Busters because they play stiff competition week in and week out. Now, with that being said, if you want recognition for what you do, then simply put, get your weight up. For your non-conference games, play a "big dog" and prove yourself that way. If you do that year in and year out, people will notice. Basically, just keep winning. Period. Ask East Carolina what happened when they stopped winning....

It's plain and simple in my opinion. Today's culture is all about "Bigger and Better". Think about it... We have to have a bigger TV... bigger car or truck... bigger house, bigger high schools, etc... It's like we have been psychologically brainwashed to believe if it's not the biggest, it doesn't have any relevance. With this mentality, somebody has to suffer and in this case it's the small towns and their schools. But if you really look at it, most of the quote blue chip athletes are coming from these small town schools. That's my interpretation of the situation.
