Washington
Report: Page 4 “When To Say When?”

There is always one sport that an individual may be better at playing than the other. What if Florida State University QB Charlie Ward (Heisman Trophy Winner 1993), would have pursued a career in the NFL rather than the NBA? Who said Bo Jackson could play two professional sports (KC Royals, Chicago
White Sox-Baseball & Oakland Raiders-Football). Come on, keep it real! Was Deion Sanders a better baseball or football player? Even Michael Jordan had a reality check when he played for the minor league Birmingham Barons in 1994 (Chicago White Sox farm team AA), before returning back to the Chicago Bulls out of retirement. Who was the 2004 Gatorade Football National Player of the Year? You guessed it Greg Paulus, who is now playing basketball not football at Duke University. Antonio Gates played basketball at Kent State and now plays tight end for the San Diego Chargers (Football) where he has made 5 consecutive Pro Bowls.

So the question is this. When do you say to your child, let’s focus on this one sport? What if the child is talented in multiple sports? What is the cut off age or grade? As a parent if truth be told, you know which sport your child is better in. Do you break the child heart by having them stick to a sport that they have no interest in? Maybe the parent lives their dream out through the child, some do.

Delaware basketball star Elena Delle Donne was given a personal trainer at the age of 7. A McDonalds All American and 2008 Naismith National High School Basketball Player of the year was given a scholarship to play basketball at the University of Connecticut. After 48 hours on campus she realized that she didn’t want to play basketball anymore and now plays volleyball at the University of Delaware.

C’mon Man!

Kut’s Take:  No matter how much we may think we know which sport an individual may be better in. Let the individual enjoy that sport for that moment, because once you let it go you may never get it back. Then through time it will all come clear on the sport that they choose.

Until next time, remember. It’s not my report, it’s Washington's Report.

Speak:  It’s 2009 and it’s ok to laugh. So let’s try laughing more in 09, it’s a time for it. Lololololol!

Ecclesiastes 3:4 -  “A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance.”

Hey Kut,
I agree with your assessment on the subject, and I would say there are a lot of parents that try to live through their kids, I mean In that young ladies case out of Delaware, a trainer at the Age of 7, that is ridiculous, she should have been outside being a kid,  she probably just resents the fact that her parents basically forced her to play basketball and she is just now realizing it, so she may have quit for that reason alone. As always Kut great job on given us the Heat in such a creative way. Happy new year and keep up the good work.
Signed -Alfredo -
