Chamblee “Lady Bulldogs” vs. Southwest DeKalb “Lady Panthers

Southwest DeKalb stifles Chamblee

Lady Panthers just too deep

Southwest DeKalb H.S. – Decatur, GA

Kayla Lewis show her determination as she rips down this rebound.
Decatur, GA - The Southwest DeKalb “Lady Panthers” are the defending Class 4A State Champions and they are a good bet to repeat again this year and one of the reasons is their depth; SWD’s second unit could compete for a playoff berth. Against Chamblee SWD Head Coach Kathy Walton who was feeling a little under the weather went deep into her bench early and often as the Lady Panthers overpowered the Lady Bulldogs for their 18th win of the season against 3 losses.

It was evident from the start that Chamblee was going to have a problem in the paint against the taller Lady Panthers; Laquisha Lewis, Kayla Lewis, Chynna Miley and Chanice Dunn controlled the glass at both ends of the court all game long and that enable the “Rivers Sisters” Kajuanna and Rlonda to get out on the break.

Chamblee freshman Bre McDonald got off to a good start by scoring 7 early points but they still trailed 12-10 with just over 3:00 minutes to play in the quarter. Southwest did a nice job of defending the Lady Bulldogs top performer Jasmine Camp who struggled from the field early on.

L. Lewis, K. Lewis and Dunn combined for 17 points in the quarter to give the Lady Panthers a 21-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Southwest continued to force the action in the second quarter as they started to pull away. The Lady Panthers have a good looking freshman of their own in Oliva Gibbs who made a couple of nice assists and scored four points; Joda Williams also stepped up her game with a pair of baskets as Southwest took a 35-19 lead into the half.

Jasmine Camp goes between her legs to try and free up some space against the Lady Panthers defenders.
Chamblee played much better in the third quarter; Camp started getting to the basket and Lucy Mason the Lady Bulldogs other good looking freshman really turned up her game scoring 11 points.

Kayla Lewis was really dominated in her play in the quarter; Chamblee had no answer for her when she got the ball down low and if they double-teamed her she would just step outside. Her basket at the end of the quarter made the score 35-19.

Camp’s jumper finally started falling but it came too late. Rlonda Rivers finished strong for the Lady Panthers scoring 9 points as Southwest DeKalb went on to a solid seventeen-point win.

SWD's Chynna Miley uses her 6-2 frame to block out Chamblee's Akia Stroud.
The Final Score:
Southwest DeKalb 69 - Chamblee 52
