5-3A Regional Championships - 3rd Place Game

New Carver School “Lady Panthers” vs. St. Pius “Lady Golden Lions

NSC captures 3rd Place

Rebounding keys Lady Panthers win

Columbia H.S. – Decatur, GA

NSC's Brandi Wilkey drives in for 2 of her 7 first quarter points.
Decatur, GA – NSC freshman Brandi Wilkey got off to a great start using her speed and quickness to easily beat the St. Pius defenders to the basket for a couple of baskets to help the Lady Panthers jump out to an early 7-3 lead.

St. Pius would quickly get back into the game; a three-point play by Nikki Reed would put them up 8-7 with 1:47 left in the first quarter.

A few seconds later Wilkey would complete a three-point play of her own to put NSC back in front 10-9. A technical foul against NSC put Sydni Payne from St. Pius on the line where she would convert both shots to give the Lady Golden Lions an 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter.

There was a lot of action in the paint as NSC’s Brittney Howard, Nacori Foreman and Anikee Combee battled Morgan Taylor-Burns, Jessica Crews and Misha Jackson from St. Pius for board supremacy.

A three-pointer by Aliyah Stokes put NSC back in front 24-21 midway through the second quarter. The Lady Panthers would increase their lead to seven, 28-21 on two baskets by Combee; this prompted a timeout by St. Pius.

Morgan Taylor-Burns(l) and Brittney Howard (r) were part of a battle to control the glass.
Reserve Tanish Wilson played a big role off the bench for NSC, her jumper from the corner would put them up 31-23 as the quarter came to a close. Howard and Combee really impressed me with their aggressive play in the first half and to me that was the biggest reason they were in the lead.

The duo of Howard and Combee continued to be the most impressive pair of players on the floor as they continued to rebound and score. Howard’s basket with 1:46 left in the third quarter gave the Lady Panthers a 41-29 lead.

With time running out in the quarter Wilkey would score on a lay-up to make it 43-29, ending the third quarter of play.

Misha Jackson who spent much of the second quarter on the bench picked up her play as the forth quarter got underway; along with Morgan Tracy they ignited a St. Pius rally that would cut the lead to 45-40 with 3:47 to play.

Emma Ucinski's hair flys up as she trys to swipe the away from Aliyah Stokes.
A big three-point play by Reed with 2:58 on the clock pulled St. Pius to within two, 47-45 forcing NSC to call a timeout.

NSC sophomore Bria Dorsey doesn’t have any quit in her and even though she didn’t play like I know she can she continued to hustle and when they really needed her she was there; her basket gave NSC a 49-45 lead.

Howard would score a big basket to give the Lady Panthers a six point lead 51-45 with just :21 seconds left to play. A steal and lay-up by Dorsey a few seconds later would seal the deal as NSC went on to capture the third place trophy. Both teams will have to hit the road for their 1st round state play off game.

The Final Score:

NSC 53 – St. Pius 45
