The ACC Tournament – 1 st Round
North Carolina State “Lady Wolf Pack” vs. Wake Forest “Lady Demon Decons”
Wake Forest ends NC State's season
Groves leads Lady Demon Decons
Greensboro Coliseum – Greensboro, NC
Greensboro, NC – With everything the North Carolina State “Lady Wolfpack” have gone through this season, loosing Coach Yow and everything you were kind of hoping that maybe they could pull a Cinderella, but 12:00 came early in the form of the Wake Forest “Lady Demon Decons” who held off a late NC State surge that would end the “Season of Yow”.
In a game that didn’t have a lot of scoring the action wasn’t really that bad, both teams hustled and gave everything they had. Former 4SHOT Hoops and Benjamin E. Mays star Nikkita Gartrell from N.C. State scored the first two-points of the game drilling a short jumper. The Lady Wolf Pack would increase the lead to 10-4 on a pair of free-throws by Tia Bell.
Wake Forest point guard Brooke Thomas didn’t score in the first half but her ability to handle NC State’s pressure helped them get back in the game. A three-pointer by Morris Courtney would give the Lady Demon Decons their first lead of the game, 17-16 with 7:57 left in the half.
Two free-throws by Gartrell would tied the game at 22-22. Wake Forest would regain the lead late in the half when Camille Collier and Brittany Waters both drained three-pointers, giving Wake a 28-22 halftime lead.
With a little less than 6:00 minutes to play in the game it appeared as if Wake Forest was in total control of the game as Corinne Groves a 6-3 senior was having her way in the paint. Grove would score six straight points to put Wake Forest up 53-39.
Not wanting to go out this way the Lady Wolf Pack flipped the script. Gartrell, Shayla Fields and Bonae Holston would lead a charge that had NC State outscoring Wake Forest 15-4 over the next five minutes to cut the lead to 57-54 with just 0:26 seconds remaining in the game.
With 0:16 seconds left a three-point attempt by Gartrelle was off, Wake Forest would grab the rebound. Thomas would seal the deal for Wake Forest with a pair of free-throws as they now advance on to the second round tomorrow.
The Final Score:
Wake Forest 59 – NC State 54
