Greensboro, NC – Boston College used their decided height advantage over Miami’s decided quickness to thump the Lady Hurricanes in their 1st round ACC match-up. The Lady Eagle that literally stood heads and shoulders above the rest was 6-6 Carolyn Swords. The sophomore made 10 of 12 shots for 20 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to lead her team to victory.

It was evident early on that Miami with all of their speed and quickness was going to have a problem dealing with Boston College’s height but the same thing was true of Boston College trying to deal with Miami’s quickness. At the end of the day Boston College showed that they also had some quickness to go with that height.

A three-pointer by Miami’s LaToya Cunningham would put the Lady Hurricanes up 12-9. Boston College would get a big boost from reserves Corey Rushin, Lauren Whitehurst and Brittany Johnson; all did an excellent job scoring and playing defense within the Lady Eagles scheme. A three-pointer by Rushin would give the Lady Eagles an 18-16 lead.

A 7-0 spurt by the Lady Eagles would increase the lead to 25-18 as they started seizing control of the game. Swords and Rushin would score again to give Boston College their largest lead of the game 32-22 with 4:36 left in the first half.

Miami’s guards Cunningham, Shenise Johnson and Riquna Williams can really make you look if you happen to be the one guarding them; the trio provided the bulk of the Lady Hurricanes scoring in the first half. Cunningham’s three-pointer would pull Miami to within four, 32-28.

Boston College would score four points at the end of the half to take a 36-29 lead into the locker room.

The early part of the second half was pretty even, James scored for Miami to cut the lead to 46-42 but after that it was the inside presence of Swords (6-6), Stefanie Murphy (6-4) and Whitehurst (6-2) that started manifesting itself. Miami tried to combat the Lady Eagles height with a little of their own, inserting 6-5 junior Ashley Sours who played relatively well.

A 20-12 run would give the Lady Eagles a 66-54 lead with just under 4:00 minutes to play. A jumper by Ayla Brown and a sweet move to the basket for two by Victoria Jones increased the Boston College lead to 71-55; at that point it was all over but the celebration as the Lady Eagles went on to a convincing 1st  round victory.
