Greensboro, NC – Things got off to a rocky start for Shelby as their 6-5 star Eric Mayo picked up two fouls with less than one minute gone in the first quarter and had to sit the remainder of the half.
East Lincoln sharpshooter Austin Davis drilled a pair of three-pointers to put the Mustangs up 6-0; 6-6 Keith Rendleman also did a nice job manning the paint.
With Mayo on the bench the “Golden Lions” struggled to get into a groove and trailed 13-5 at the end of the first quarter.
Shelby’s bench did a great job in the second quarter of getting them back in the game, with brother Eric on the bench Derrick Mayo and Zacc Gullatte helped Shelby pick it up on the defensive end of the court while power forward Quevalias Marray was doing his thing in the paint.
Marray and Nick Stamp would also provide some much needed scoring for Shelby as they stormed back to tie the game at 20-20 heading into the half.

| 6-6 Keith Rendleman was maned an All-Tourney selection. |
Things didn’t get any better for Eric Mayo as he quickly picked up his third personal foul; the “Golden Lions” Head Coach Aubrey Hollifield did a good job of substituting his star in spot situations in the second half.
Rendleman hit a short turn-around jumper to give East Lincoln a 25-22 lead but the “Golden Lions” would get a pair of baskets from D. Mayo to take a 27-25 lead.
It was obvious that when E. Mayo was on the floor that Shelby was a different team, he scored his first basket with 2:21 left in the third quarter to make the score 31-27. The “Golden Lions” would lead 33-29 at the end of the third quarter.

| Derrick Mayo stepped in when borther Eric got into foul trouble. |
D. Mayo started the forth quarter scoring another basket to push Shelby’s lead up to six, 35-29 but the joy of the basket would be short live when he picked up his forth foul on a lucky off-balanced shot by the “Mustangs” Drew Spear.
Davis who had hit a couple of big shots early was unable to find his touch again until late in the game but by then it was too late. Shelby would hit their free-throws down the stretch and hold on to capture the 2009 NCHSA Class 2A Western Regional Championship.
Nick Stamp scored 12 points and dished out four assists and was named the games “Most Outstanding Player”
The Final Score:
