2009 NCHSA Class 3A Western Region Finals

Concord “Spiders” vs. Forestview “Jaguars”

Forestview advances to state finals

Sumner’s free-throws beat Jaguars

Greensboro Coliseum – Greensboro, NC

Freshman Jack "Cold" Sumner scored 22 and was the games MVP.
Greensboro, NC – With .08 seconds to play it looked like Concord and Forestview were heading for overtime but the Jaguars’ Jack Sumner was fouled. The 6-1 freshman stepped to the line and like a seasoned pro calmly drilled both shots to win the game and send Forestview to the Class 3A State Championship Game next weekend.

Concord jumped out to a 12-8 first quarter lead behind the play of 6-1 sophomore Jacquise Moore and 6-1 senior Chance Rucker.

Moore continued to pace the “Spiders” as the second quarter got under way; jumpers Moore and a lay-up by teammate Roger Smith would give Concord their largest lead of the game, 20-11.

Concord's Jacquise Moore dropped 19 in a loosing effort.
Forestview would make a run behind the play of 6-0 sophomore Chris Johnson and Sumner. Johnson would score a couple of baskets and Sumner would knocked down a three-pointer at the buzzer to cut Concord’s lead to 27-24 heading in to the half.

Concord would once again appear to seize control of the game building up a 13-point lead (43-30) in the third quarter.

Midway through the forth quarter the Jaguars’ 6-4 jumping jack, junior DeJuan Means scored six-points to lead an 11-0 run that tied the game at 59-59 with 4:22 left in the game.

Concord went back up by five, 66-61 before five, Means scored on a lay-up and Sumner drilled another three-pointer to tie the game at 66-66.

Forestview's Dejuan Means throws down 2 of his 19 points.
With the score tied at 68-68 and .08 seconds remaining Moore was called for a foul that sent Sumner to the line where he swished both free-throws to put Forestview up by two. Concord had one last chance but Rucker missed a lay-up and Means grabbed the rebound to end the game.

The win sends Forestview to the Class 3A State Championship Game next weekend in Raleigh.

For his efforts Jack Sumner was named the games “Most Valuable Player”. Sumner finished with 22 points, 4 assists and 4 rebounds.
