GHSA Class 1A Semifinals

Randolph-Clay “Lady Red Devils” vs. Wesleyan “Lady Wolves”

Wesleyan back in the state championship game

Three-point shooting propels Wesleyan

The Macon Centre-Plex, Macon, GA

Erin Hall got Wesleyan going early, drilling 4 three-pointers.
Macon, GA – The Lady Wolves from Wesleyan knocked down three-pointer after three-pointer as they rolled over Randolph-Clay to advance on to another state championship game and a chance to three-peat as state champions.

Randolph-Clay actually got out to a good start, Destiny Mitchell a 4SHOT Hoops All-Star scored three early baskets as the Lady Red Devils took the early lead.

Wesleyan sharp shooter Erin Hall, who is also a 4SHOT Hoops All-Star started entering the Matrix as she knocked down back-to-back three-pointers as the Lady Wolves made their move; she would add a third before the quarter ended as Wesleyan move in front 16-12.

In the second quarter Wesleyan Head Coach Jan Azar had her team pressing full-court and it really paid off as they started forcing Randolph-Clay into numerous turnovers, several of which were turned into Wesleyan points.

Destiny Mitchell played a big time game scoring a game high 32 points.
The Lady Wolves would continue to play three-ball; Hall would knock down her forth of the game, Logan Morris and Kennington Groff would also hit threes but it was the play of up and coming Grace Leah Baughn who really caught my eye. The Wesleyan sophomore drilled a three and scored three other baskets as the Lady Wolves began to pull away.

Wesleyan’s defense held Randolph-Clay to just eight second quarter points as the rolled into the locker room with a commanding 43-20 lead.

Wesleyan continued to turn up the pressure defensively as the third quarter got under way but Randolph-Clay had made their halftime adjustments and also began to apply a little pressure of their own.

Mitchell had a big third quarter for Randolpy-Clay, as did teammate Asha Alexander. The duo combined for 24 of the teams 25 third quarter points.

Unfortunately for Randolph-Clay they weren’t able to cut into the lead because Wesleyan was scoring at the same clip.  Baughn would dill two more three-pointers and Chantel Kennedy would added three baskets to help the Lady Wolves maintain their comfortable lead.

Grace Leah Baughn knocked down 3 three-poiners.
The one name I had not mentioned up to this point was that of last years 4SHOT Hoops and Georgia “Player of the Year” Anne Marie Armstrong, who up to this point really hadn’t had to do much because her teammates had been playing so well.

In the forth quarter she reminded everyone that she still one of the top players in the country by scoring 10 points as Wesleyan finished off the Lady Red Devils to advance to Saturday’s Class 1A Championship game against the winner of the Savannah Country Day/Southwest Atlanta Christian winner. Wesleyan is the two-time defending state champions.

The Final Score:
Wesleyan 84 – Randolph-Clay 59

Scoring Recap

Wesleyan: Anne Marie Armstrong scored 18 to lead four players in double-figure scoring. Erin Hall finished with 16, Grace Leah Baughn had 15 and Logan Morris chipped in with 12.

Randolph-Clay: Destiny Mitchell scored a game high 32 points for the Lady Red Devils and Asha Alexander finished with 15.
