Miller Grove “Wolverines” vs. Tucker “Tigers”

The Gwinnett Arena  – Duluth, GA

Duluth, GA – After losing twice in the regular season to the Miller Grove “Wolverines”, the Tucker “Tigers” look to have something to prove against region rival and Dekalb County foe in the Georgia High School Association class 4-A finals. Both teams feature stellar athletes in the Tigers Manny Atkins (Virginia Tech signee) and Mfon Udofia (GA Tech signee). O and we can’t forget about the highflying Wolverine Stephen Hill (GA Tech signee Football). The Wolverines came up short in the 2008 semifinals in a 76-68 lost to the Fayette County “Tigers”. Can the Wolverines finish the drill in 09? The Tigers are no strangers to the finals as they won it in 2007 in a upset victory in another all Dekalb County finals against the Columbia “Eagles”. The stage was set as we look to see if the Wolverines could make it three victories in a row over the Tigers or would it be not this time Miller Grove?

The first period would start with a quick drive to the basket by Mfon, followed by a quick hook shot from hill to give the Wolverines a 6-2 lead. The Wolverines would let up on the scoring as Donte Williams would connect at the free throw line for 2 points and Henry Brooks would connect on a floater to give Miller Grove a 10-2 lead. Tucker Coach James Hartry would call a timeout but Mfon would make it irrelevant by opening the timeout with a three-pointer to catapult a 8-0 run to end the first period to the score 18-2.

The Tigers would finally get things started in the second period after scoring only 2 points in the first. Manny would convert on two lay-ups but the Wolverines attack would be too as Mfon 7 points would lead the team during the break to the score 32-15.

End of the third period Miller Grove 42 Tucker 20.

The Wolverines would out score the Tigers 17 to 11 in the fourth period. You knew it was over when coach Hartry substituted the bench players with 2:43 left in the game.  Both teams gave it their all but Miller Grove would come up victorious in this one.

Tucker:  Manny Atkins 11 points to lead the Tigers, followed by 9 points from Brandon Dawson.
