Street Talk - "Un-KUT" with Kecia Miller
There are times when you see young players that have that look where you do this double-take because their game looks so tight, well a couple a years ago at a camp I spotted this, then up and coming freshmen point guard who had that look and her name is Kecia Miller. As an incoming freshman Miller was highlighted in the inaugural issue of the 4SHOT Hoops Magazine
Now heading into her junior year at Campbell High School, Miller has established herself as one of more athletic PG’s in the state. Miller is from a family of athletes, her brother Trey Miller who plays both basketball and football helped lead Whitefield Academy to the Class A State basketball championship this past season is headed to the Naval Academy on a football scholarship next season.
A member of the Georgia Hoopstars coached by J.D. Davis. Miller’s game has college recruiters busy at work trying to persuade her that their college is the one for her. I caught up Miller to see what’s been happening since I last interviewed her a couple of years ago.
L.A.: Kecia, it’s been a little while since our last interview, how have you been doing, has your game and team improved like you had envisioned a few years ago? Kecia: I’ve been well. Yes; my team has been doing well in the state tournaments, which seems to surprise a few people. I’ve been working harder to improve my game since my recent injury.
 |
| Where ever Kecia is playing you can bet her No.1 fan, Moms (Chenea Miller) is right there cheering her on. |
L.A.: What are you looking forward to the most this coming AAU season? Kecia: Just playing new and better teams, playing at a faster/ higher level, and having fun!.
L.A.: What part of your game needs the most improvement on? Kecia: Getting quicker on defense. L.A.: Now that your brother Trey has signed with the Naval Academy, how happy are you for him and has that given you extra motivation to go out and work even harder? Kecia: Ahhhh; I’m very proud of him! Being that I look up to him like I do, it drives me even more to try to get to that point (full ride scholarship), and beyond. L.A.: At one point you indicated that Mariah Candler (S.A.C.A) was the toughest player that you have had to guard is she still the toughest or have some other players creep into the picture? Kecia: I’ve played against tougher players thus far...Brittney Griner is one who definitely stands out.
L.A: Which one of your parents gets more jacked up for a game; your mother or father?
Kecia: My father no doubt about it!
L.A: (lol), I noticed that.
 |
| Pops - Donnell Miller is probably the most intense of all the Millers during the game. |
L.A.: Who’s more affect by a loss, you or your father?
Kecia: (Lol), that’s a tough one, but I think it affects me more because I’m the one actually playing in the game.
L.A.: Keep it real, I know your brother and father have game but can Mom’s hoop (lol)?
Kecia: Umm…(lol). I THOUGHT she could, but once she got out on the court with my brother, and me my opinions quickly changed. (lol) She has pretty good knowledge about the game though.
L.A.: Tell me something about yourself that people wouldn't know by just looking at you? Kecia: That I’m a very smart student and I love to eat!! (lol)
L.A.: If you could meet anyone (not an athlete) in the world (past or present) who would it be and why? Kecia: President Obama because he has allowed me to be apart of a great and dramatic change in history…I would want to thank him!

| Big brother Trey has been a shining example for his little sister to follow. |
L.A.: As an athlete is it easier to get a date or harder? Kecia: For me it's easier. All the boys are in to the athletes now, i guess...or maybe it's just my good looks! (laughing)
L.A.: Have you ever heard your parents yelling;” hustle, get moving, you can do better than that etc.” and it just irked you" Kecia: All the time! My dad does most of the yelling but my mom does it too. I used to get mad, but now i just try to block most of it out.
