some of the top ballers in the New England area, now granted the area is not exactly a hot bed for high school hoop talent but the “Hawks” Coaches know that if they play against some of the top talent in at varies AAU tournaments around the county that somebody will notice that … hey we’ve got some kids that can really ball.
Well one of those players is 6-7 Tony Gaffney from Somerset High School in Somerset, Mass. Gaffney has a smooth game, he can go to the whole or pull up and nail the jumper from long range. Against the “Legends” from Louisville he put all of his skills on display, showing he could play both inside and out. He fell off a bit in the semi-final round against the Mid-State Bombers from Tennessee but you can see that the talent base is there.
Gaffney has lots of room on his 6-7 frame for more weight and muscle. According to his coaches Gaffney, a senior will probably attend a prep school next season, which might not be a bad ideal because he’s got a lot of talent and a nice upside if he wants it bad enough.
This past high school season Gaffney led his high school (the Somerset “Blue Raiders”) to one of the biggest turnarounds in school history. Coming off of a 2-20 junior season, the “Blue Raiders” improved to 16-3 overall and close out their EAC schedule with an 11-1 mark.
In doing so Somerset captured the MIAA Division 2 South Sectional championship defeating top-seeded O'Bryant, 56-53, at the Clark Center on the campus of UMass-Boston. Gaffney was a force in that game despite playing with a heavily wrapped broken finger. He scored 19 points and on defense dominated the lane blocking 12 shots and altering a slew more.
The school also captured its first league title they shared top honors in the Southeastern Massachusetts Conference in 1976 and the school's first undisputed crown since 1971
Gaffney capped off an outstanding senior season by being named All-State. Playing center he nearly averaged a quadruple double with 23 points, 12 rebounds, 11 blocks, and 7 assists per game. Gaffney helped Somerset win the Eastern Athletic Conference and the Division 2 South title. As a junior averaged 19 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists per contest.
He finished his high school career at Somerset with 1,160 career points. “TG” is a real good looking player and has the tools to keep getting better.
