Charlton Co. dominates final day to win track title
Jefferson, GA

Charlton County trailed Grady High School heading into the final day of action at the Track & Field Championships but after the first event (the 4x100 Meter relay), which they won and 5 individual titles later the “Indians” held up the Class 2A Track & Field Championship Trophy.

Charlton County’s David Pender and Tony Glover finished 1 & 2 in the 100 Meters while teammate Justin Williams sped away to win the gold in the 200 and 400 Meters. All three were members of the winning 4x100 Relay team along with DeVaughn Whitley.

Grady High School, which is located in Atlanta, GA managed to hold onto second place over-all by virtue of their 2nd (Saji Girvan) and 7th (Collier Johnson) place finishes in the 800 Meters. Kris Ward (Providence Christian) blew past Saji Girvan (Grady) and Justin Schneider (GAC) to take home the gold in the 800 Meters. Girvan also finished with the silver medal at last years state championships.

Nick Stephens doubled up for Grady H.S. winning both the 1600 and 3200 Meter events. He beat out teammate Girvan in the 1600 Meters while Ward who won the 800 Meters finished third in the 1600.

David Pender (Charlton County H.S.) who was named the 4SHOT Sports “Most Outstanding Performer” in Class 2A picked up two more gold metals when he leaped to victories in the Long and Triple Jump events. In the Shot Put Chris Lewis (Pike County’s) returned to the state meet and redeemed his 3rd place finish last year by besting Lionel Mapp (Greene County) for the gold.
