Cedar Shoals captures track title in last event
Jefferson, GA

The “Jaguars” from Cedar Shoals High School in Athens, GA did not win one individual track title Saturday in Jefferson but when the gold was on the line Cedar Shoals got after it. With one event remaining in the meet they found themselves trailing Marist and St. Pius. Needing a first place win (10 points) and at least a forth place finish (4 points) by their 2 entry in the 4x400 Meter Relay race would send the “Jaguars” home with the State Championship.

Lightning did strike twice Saturday, the first time nature sent a scare into the stadium, the next time it was the Cedar Shoals 4x400 teams (Team1: Corrin Breeding, Quinton Goode, Jamaal Hinton and Donovan Barnett) and (Team2: Sam Craig, Maurice Rushing, Carlton Golden and Greg Roseboro). Team 1 took first place and Team 2 blew past Hiram and St. Pius to finish forth giving the “Jaguars” and unbelievable come back to win the Class AAAA Track & Field Championship.

The only double winner in Class AAAA was Bainbridge hurdler Tavaris Washington, the future Auburn “Tiger” who was named the 4SHOT Sports “Co-Most Outstanding Performer” in Class 4A duplicated the feat of fellow Bainbridge hurdle star Tyron Akins who won the 110 and 300 hurdles last year.

Football stars Eric Berry (Creekside High School) and Marist star Anderson Russell (an Ohio State signee) finished 1 and 2 in the 200 Meters. Antoine Thomas (Warner Robins) and Shannon Davis (Mays) battled to the wire in the 400 Meters before Thomas pulled out the victory for the gold metal.

Mays held on to the 800 Meter title when Reginald Warren overcame Justin Squirewell of Southwest Dekalb down the home stretch for the win. The “Raiders” Christopher Wood took home the gold last year.

In the 1600 and 3200 Meter races Ryan Clay (Alexander H.S.) and Daniel Gormley (East Paulding H.S.) switched metals. Clay won the gold in the 1600 and Gormley took the silver. In the 3200 the roles were just reversed.

Another football star Daniel Finnerty (St. Pius) showed off the strength that helped land him a football scholarship to Appalachia State when he tossed the Shot Put 56’-6.76” to win the event. His toss was the furthest of any thrower in any classification.
