L.A. "Keeping it Real" with Kristina Huff

Street Talk has it on good authority that there is going to be an uprising taking place this basketball season in Conyers, GA. My investigations found out that the fire stirring up this uprising is All-State PG Kristina Huff, a 5-8 senior from Salem High School. I took a trip out to Salem H.S. to visit with Huff and found out that her and the “Lady Seminoles” are going to be causing havoc on opponents this season.

L.A.:  “Who have been some of the most influential people in your life”?

Kristina: ”The most influential people in my life have been my mother; Kim Osborne, my coach; Bill Roberts and my grandparents; Judith & Frederick Osborne.”

L.A.:  “What has been the most memorable moment of your career so far?
Kristina: “I really enjoy my teammates, last year when we went to camp at Georgia College we had a lot of fun in the dorms but when it was time to leave I really cried because I considered them as part of my family and I knew that we won’t be enjoying camp together again.”

L.A.:  “Last season you all won a Regional Championship but you lost so many players to graduation do you feel any added pressure as a senior to carry the team?”
Kristina:
“Not really because I think we have a good squad this year. The team is basically the same, we just have a few adjustment we need to make and hopefully we will go a little further in the state playoffs.”

L.A.:  “What has been the most memorable moment of your career so far?
Kristina:
“The biggest moment of my career came last season when I scored my 1,000th point against Loganville. I seemed like every time I touched the ball they were on me like white on rice. They had some good defenders but I was able to score 13-points and go over the 1,000-point mark.”

L.A.:  “What moments would you most like to forget?

Kristina: “The thing I hate the most is loosing to our rival Rockdale H.S.; last year we lost to them twice but not this year.”

L.A.: What is the strongest part of your game?

Kristina: “I have a tight handle and I can see the floor pretty good.”

L.A.:   “What do you think you need to work on to take your game to the next level?”

Kristina: “I don’t have a lot of range on my jumper or I didn’t. I worked really hard on that this summer, so people can continue to drop back on me if they want to.”

L.A.:   “As the point do you kind of feel the flow of the game and adjust your game accordingly?”

Kristina: “As the leader of the team this year I need to focus more before and during the game on what I need to do personally and team wise to help us win. I usually adjust my game according to how the game is going and how my teammates are doing.”

L.A.:  “What type of team and or personal goals have you set for yourself this season?”
Kristina: “I have to have more consistency in my game. Last year I would score 4-points one game and 20 the next. I did that all of last year and that has to change for us to go deeper in the playoffs.

L.A.:  “Who have been some of the toughest players you have had to guard?”

Kristina: “Angelique Burtts (Rockdale H.S), she has the height on me but my speed and quickness make up for that. Jelly (Angelica Mealing) from Avondale and Jewel May from Heritage H.S., at 6-1 it’s tough for me to get around her sometimes without her packing my shot.”

L.A.:
“How does summer ball (AAU) differ from the regular season?”
Kristina: “There are a lot of plays we have to run playing school ball, because we have to be more organized to win games. Too me AAU is like playing street ball where you can do whatever to get a shot off. You hardly ever see zones being played during AAU season, playing man-to-man speeds the game up and it helps you develop your game on both ends of the court.”

L.A.: “So which do you find tougher to play?”

Kristina: “I find playing school ball a lot harder to play. I don’t have a lot to think about when I’m playing AAU ball, I just go out and play. Now the competition is a lot tougher in AAU.”

L.A.: “Now does that help you bring your game up to another level playing against that type of competition?”
Kristina: “Let me tell you, when I first came to Salem I had been playing AAU and my game was so ahead of the players here that I had to slow down my game. I was making no-look passes and things like that and my teammates had no idea what was happening, so it was way different. Now they have gotten use too me and they can handle the way I play.”

L.A.: “What was the last CD you brought and why?”

Kristina: “Ludicrous was the last CD I brought, (laughing) but I have a burner so I kind of burn CD’s.”

L.A.: “Do you have a pre-game routine that you go through before each game that you could tell me about?”
Kristina: “I pick a song and it doesn’t matter who it is but if the beat pumps me up I play it to get jacked before the game. Sometimes I will play some Lil John.”

L.A.:   “Nike, Reebok or Adidas?”

Kristina: “Nike”

L.A.:  “Sean John or Roca-Wear?”
Kristina: “Roca-Wear”

L.A.:  “Escalade, Denali, Corvette, Mercedes or Ferrari?”

Kristina: “Ferrari”

L.A.:  “Who’s your favorite player?”
Kristina: “Lisa Leslie, I like her attitude. She has a bad attitude, in a good way.”

L.A.: “Are you a Player of BALLER?”

Kristina: “I think I’m a player.”

L.A.: “ Really, well I think you are a BALLER. At 4SHOT we think Players just go out on the court and play like every other player on the court. Now a BALLER takes over the game, not in a selfish way but there at “a whole nother’ level”.”
Kristina: (laughing) “Alright, that’s what I am.”

L.A.: “Kristina, thanks for taking the time to “Keep it Real”

Kristina: “Your welcome.”
