Day 1

Hardaway “Golden Hawks”- 53 vs. Carver-Columbus “Tigers” - 48
The “Tigers” from Carver rode the play of 6-4 Fr.-Jarvis Jones (15pts) and 6-2 Sr.-Erich Tyler (13pts) to jump out to a 14-7 lead over Hardaway. The “Golden Hawks” took flight in the 2nd quarter behind 6-4 Sr.-James Fisher (16pts) to close the gap to 24-22 heading into the half. Fisher continued to play well in the second half and got some help from Lopez Ware and Johnathan Hudson as Hardaway surged into the lead 42-34. Carver made a run in the 4th quarter but fell short 53-48 in the 1st round of action.




Spencer “Greenwave” - 56 vs. Central-Phoenix, AL “Red Devils” - 53
Central High from Phoenix City, Al and Spencer were 2 of the co-favorites heading into this 1st round battle and they didn’t disappoint the fans on hand as they battled for 4 quarters.

Spencer took a 13-12 lead behind the play of 6-0 So.-Joshua Ollie (15pts) and 6-3 Sr.-Azive Armour (15pts). Central’s 6-6 Jr.-Cordero Smith (12pts) was one of the top players in the tournament and he showed why doing a nice job of battling Spencer’s “Twin Towers” 6-10 Sr.-Bernard Toombs (10pts) and 6-9 Sr.-Kareem Carter.

Behind Smith, 5-10 Sr.-Dewayne Bennett (10pts) and 6-5 Sr.-Earl Alexander the “Red Devils” fought their way back into the game to take a 29-26 halftime lead. In the 3rd quarter the teams took turns exchanging baskets back and forth as Central maintain a slim 43-41 lead. Spencer turned up the defensive pressure in the 4th quarter and forced Central into some untimely turnovers. Ollie and Armour scored some big basket down the stretch as Spencer came back for a hard fought 56-53 win.


Shaw “Raiders” - 93 vs. Northside “Patriots” - 88
Northside and Shaw are no strangers to one another so it was no secret that both teams wanted to get out and run and the scoreboard reflected that. Shaw got big halves from Sr.-Dontae Fedrick (17pts) and Sr.-Eric Evans (17pts) but Northside countered with 6-5 Sr.-Rhomand Dupass (23pts) who helped the “Patriots” take a 44-40 halftime lead. In the 3rd quarter Shaw surged back into the lead as Jr.-DeMarcus McCrory (14pts) and Jr.-Patrick Grant 913pts) picked up their games. Northside fought back and pulled even but down the stretch Shaw got a big hoop from Sr.-Chris Bowens and held on for a 93-88 win.


Jordan “Red Jackets” - 70 vs. Brookstone “Cougars” - 45
The “Cougars” got a big game from 6-7 Sr.-Mitchell Lane (25pts) and jumped out to an early 17-13 lead. But in the 2nd quarter Jordan tighten up their defense on the big man and 5-11 Sr.-Chris Green (18pts), 5-7 So.-Winford Ivey (13pts) started hitting some shots as the “red Jackets” scored 27 points to take a 40-29  halftime lead. Green continued to score in the 2nd half and 5-11 Jr.-Tim Jordan (10pts) picked up his game as Jordan easily beat the “Cougars” 70-45.

 

 


Kendrick “Cherokees” - 80  vs. Columbus “Blue Devils” - 75
For two quarters the “Blue Devils” from Columbus High controlled the game against Kendrick. 6-2 So.-Will Howard (22pts) and 5-11 Sr.-Tony Calloway (15pts) were feeling it as Columbus took a 44-35 halftime lead. In the 3rd Kendrick really got after applying defensive pressure al over the court and it caused Columbus into several turnovers. Offensively the “Cherokees” 6-0 Jr.-Michael Shorter (19pts), 6-0 Sr.-Waydean Streeter (18pts) and 6-4 Sr.-Jeff Grace (14pts) started zeroing in as Kendrick stormed back to beat Columbus by a score of 80-75.

 


Pacelli “Vikings” - 63 vs. Harris County “Tigers” - 58
Led by 5-11So.- PG-Jacquise Terry the “Vikings” from Pacelli  looked like they were going to put this one away early in the 4th quarter as they opened up a double digit lead. But the hungry “Tigers” from Harris County fought back behind the play Jr.-JJ Wortham and Jr.-Kier Jackson to pull to within 4 points. Down the stretch Pacelli needed every rebound their big man 6-8 Jr.-William Coleman could come up with to hold on for a tough 63-58 win.
