Atlanta Marriott Northwest Holiday Invitational

“Lady Bears” maul Alabama State

Kelly drains 4 three-pointers to lead the way

Alexander Memorial Coliseum/GA Tech – Atlanta, GA

Seniors Colleen Kelly (11) and Sarah Hayes (12) were the keys to the “Lady Bears” win.
Brown University senior Colleen Kelly can stroke the ball and in the 3rd place game against Alabama State the “Lady Hornets” saw how deadly she could be when she drilled 4 three-pointers from deep behind the arch to lead Brown to victory.

Alabama State jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead against Brown University in the 3rd Place Game of the Georgia Tech/Atlanta Marriott Northwest Holiday Invitational but after a pair of turnovers they found themselves trailing 5-4.

The last time I saw Alabama State’s L’Teisha Holloway play was last year in the GHSA state finals playing for Westside-Macon and to see the change in her game in just a few short months  has been something to see. Holloway was an al-state performer in high school but her game has taken off to a whole different level now; her jumper put the “Lady Hornet” back in front 8-5.

Head Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson’s team got a big-time effort inside from Danielle Sanders and Latille Ross as they started taking control of the game. Basket by Holloway and Shantae Robinson gave Alabama State their largest lead of the game, 15-9 with 10:03 left in the half.

Former Westside-Macon H.S. star L’Teisha Holloway scored 12 points for Alabama State.
The two point-guards Shantae Robinson and Jaclyn Vocell (Brown) did a nice job of setting up their teammates but both teams missed great opportunities to score off of those would be assists.

Brown’s Annesley O’Neal is another former Georgia high school star that made a good showing in front of family and friends. O’Neal a sophomore starred at Heard County High School; her 2 free-throws gave the “Lady Bear” their first lead of the game 17-15 with 7:35 on the clock.

With 4:38 to go in the half Robinson scored to put the “Lady Hornets” back in front 19-17. Alabama State’s aggressive play caused Brown into several turnovers midway through the half but they also started picking up some untimely fouls that put the “Lady Bears” in the bonus.

Seniors Colleen Kelly and Sarah Hayes from Brown are two good-looking players and were the keys to the “Lady Bears”; a nice move to the basket by Hayes gave Brown a 20-19 lead but A&M countered with a basket inside by Ross to regain the lead 21-20.

Former Heard Co. H.S. star Annesley O'Neal scored 8 points for Brown..
With under 2:00 minutes to play in the half Brown really started picking up the pace of the game; Kelly scored on a fast-break and then she drilled a three-pointer with :32 seconds left on the clock to put Brown up 27-22.

With time running out in the 1st half Hayes went the length of the court pulled up and hit a jumper at the buzzer to give Head Coach Jean Marie Burr and the “Lady Bears” a 29-22 halftime lead.

The pace of the game really picked up in the 2nd half; Kelly got things started drilling a three-pointer to give Brown their largest lead of the game 32-22. The “Lady Hornets” countered with a pair of jumpers by Holloway that cut the lead to 34-26.

The “Lady Hornets” continued to chip away at the lead going inside to Sanders who scored and was fouled; her free-throw cut the lead to 34-31. A few seconds later Frantina Coleman, who had a good game drilled a three-pointer to tie the game at 34-34.

Latille Ross finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Kelly drilled her second three-pointer to key a 5 point spurt that put Brown back in front 39-34 with 13:31 to play. The “Lady Bears” made the score 42-36 when reserve Jaclyn Goldbarg hit a jumper.

With under 5:00 minutes to play Hayes and Kelly took over for Brown. Hayes hit a pair of foul shots and Kelly killed the “Lady Hornets” as she drained her 4th three-pointer and she stuck two other jumpers to give the “Lady Bears” a 63-53 lead. The “Lady Hornets” couldn’t recover from Kelly’s onslaught and fell to Brown by a final score of 67-55.
