| South Atlanta's Rapheal Wimby won the tournaments MVP award for the 2nd straight year. |
They may as well rename the APS Holiday Tournament the South Atlanta Classic, because for the last 5 years Head Coach Michael Reddick and his “Hornets” have rolled through the tournament and captured the championship. Leading the way for the 2nd year in a row was 5-11 senior Rapheal Wimby who scored a game high 17 points and won his 2nd straight MVP award.
The “Hornets” pressure defense and the shot blocking ability of their 6-9 prized freshman Derrick Favors forced North Atlanta to take some awkward shots. Favors also got a chance to showoff his offensive skills scoring 6 points as South Atlanta took a 10-4 lead.
North Atlanta made some adjustments in the 2nd quarter and got some key baskets from Jason Harlow and Darrell Wilcox as they cut into the South Atlanta lead. The “Hornets” held steady and got a big three-pointer from Durron Durham to take a 21-17 halftime lead.

South Atlanta upped their defensive pressure in the 3rd quarter and with Favors and 6-5 Demario Reid crashing the boards Wimby and Deangelo Christian were able to get out on the break. North Atlanta started applying their own pressure and M. Cabbage scored a couple of baskets to get the “Warriors” back into the game. A basket by 6-10 senior Alex Cornett cut the lead to 27-25 with 3:44 left in the quarter.
Spearheaded by the inside play of Favors the “Hornets” went on a mini run at the end of the 3rd quarter. Wimby’s jumper with time running out in the quarter gave South Atlanta a 39-29 lead.
North Atlanta appeared to run out of steam in the 4th quarter, as their shots started coming up short and they started turning the ball over. Reid continued to pound the glass and Wimby knocked down a pair of long jumpers as South Atlanta pulled away to a convincing 54-36 win to capture their 5th straight APS Holiday Tournament Championship.
