Gold’s Gym Holiday Classic

Towers thumps Salem to win Classic Title

Kithan Caines named MVP

Salem H.S. – Conyers, GA

Kithan Caines scored a game high 19 points (3 three-pointers) and was named the MVP.
If the title game of the Gold’s Gym Holiday Classic between Towers and Salem had been a 12 round championship fight they would have stopped the fight after the first 3 rounds due to a technical knockout. Led by game MVP Kithan Caines and Brodrick Walker the “Titans” from Towers came out running and gunning knocking down three-pointers from everywhere and never looked back.

With the Towers big men crashing the boards the “Titans” were able to get out on the break; PG-J.J.  Hines did a nice job of pushing the ball up the court and dishing it out to the wings where Caines and Walker either pulled up and  shot or took the ball to the basket for an easy lay-up. Caines basket with 4:40 left in the 1st quarter gave Towers a 14-6 lead.

Salem’s big man Josh Williams was the only “Seminole” that made a dent in the “Titans” amour scoring 6 points in the quarter. Reserve Courtney Stanton came off the bench and joined the three-pointers club with a long bomb of his own. Caines hit another  long three and Walker scored his 13th point to give Towers a 28-13 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.

Darius Mathis scored 12 points to pace Salem
Salem went from bad to worst in the 2nd quarter managing to score only 3 points; meanwhile Towers continued to stroke the ball getting another three-pointer from Caines and Stanton. Cedric Jackson came in for the “Titans” and did a nice job scoring a pair of baskets as Towers took a commanding 44-17 halftime lead.
The “Seminoles” Head Coach Darren Wilkins must have had a few choice words for his ball-club at the half because they came out of the locker room and played like a totally different team in the 3rd quarter. Darius Mathis finally showed what kind of player he was drilling a pair of three-points to lead the way.
As well as Salem played in the 3rd quarter it still wasn’t enough because Towers continued to turn loose the air force, dropping three-point bombs left and right. Caines knocked down his 3rd three-pointer of the game and Travis Spurley came in and added some firepower with yet another Tower’s three-pointer.

Courtney Stanton hit 5 three-pointers to finish with 17 points
But the story in the 3rd quarter was Courtney Stanton who stepped into “The Zone” for a few minutes drilling 3 three-pointers in the quarter, his 4th attempted just rimmed out. Towers led 70-37 at the end of the quarter.

The 4th quarter was just a formality for Towers Head Coach Rodney Knox and his “Titans” as he substituted his players freely. Towers sophomore Anthony Butler made the most of his opportunity knocking down 2 three-pointers as Towers went on to capture the 2005 Gold’s Gym Holiday Classic with a convincing 87-44 win over Salem.
