B.E. Mays captures ATC Title
Therrell’s Cleckley named Most Outstanding Female Athlete
Lakewood Stadium – Atlanta, GA
The “Lady Raiders” from B.E. Mays scored 55 points in the field events and needed every one of them to hold off the “Lady Panthers” from Therrell and that frightening speed they possess, 135 points to 122 points. Therrell only managed 12 points in the field events. North Atlanta finished 3rd with 60 points.
There were several outstanding performers in the meet but none shown brighter than Therrell’s Quaneshi Cleckley who was named the meets Most Outstanding Female Athlete. Cleckley captured the 100 (14.31) and 300 Meter Hurdles (43.96) and she ran a leg on both of the “Lady Panthers” victorious relay teams (4x100 and 4x400). Cleckley also took 2nd place in the Triple Jump with a leap of 34’-06”.

l-r (Cargill Makiya, Brittany Long (c - standing), Quaneshi Cleckley and Lee Deanna (hands on knees))
Sophomore Brittany Long from Therrell is a long legged beauty that runs like the wind; and she does it so effortlessly. Her time of 12.05 in the 100M (at the Fort Valley State University Invitational early this season) is the best in the state so far this year. Her time of 12.21 was fast enough to easily beat the ATC field and give her the 1st of her 4 gold metals on the day. She also captured the 200M in a state best time of 24.32. She wasn’t finished, her anchor leg helped the 4x100 relay team to a state best 47.10.
I have no doubt that if needed Long could also run the individual 400 meters and win, she ran the anchor for that winning 4x400 relay team, teaming up with Cleckley, Lee Deanna and Cargill Makiya in a time of 3:55.61.

North Atlanta's Porche Byrd (a transfer from Cross Keys H.S.) won the 400M.
B.E. Mays all-time leading scorer in basketball Nikitta Gartrell (a NC State signee) should have missed the meet to play in the McDonald’s All-American in San Diego on Wednesday night, but for some reason she wasn’t selected to play so she took out her frustration on the 800M and 1Mile competitors. Gartrell easily outdistance both fields to win in times of 2:21.53 (800M) and 5:24.64 (1Mile).
Cleckley, Long and Gartrell also received awards for the most points scored in an individual track event, each scored 20 points.
The Most Outstanding Award for their performance in the field events went to Rachel Dupree from B.E. Mays. Dupree finished 1st in the Triple Jump (34’-11”) and 3rd in the High Jump (5’-0”).
Individual titles went to North Atlanta's Porche Byrd (a transfer from Cross Keys H.S.), who won the 400M in a time of 55.14. Grady’s Jamera Henderson captured the High Jump (5’-.04”). The Long Jump went to South Atlanta hoops star Kashira Raven (16’-.05”). Another hoops star, Stephanie Ellis from Douglass won the Shot Put with a toss of 32’-03.50” and the Discus was won by Grady’s Holland Teannah with a throw of 113’-09”.

Therrell's Crystal Leamons finishes the 3200M despite a possible broken leg.
In the 3200M race Therrell teammates Jasmine Scank and Crystal Leamons were battling it out for 1st and 2nd place; with about 20 meters to go Leamons fell to the track and was unable to get up. As Scank crossed the finish line she looked back at her fallen teammate who was unable to get up, falling each time she tried. As runners began to pass the fallen Leamons she tried to crawl to the finish line but was unable to do so. Finally with encouragement from teammates, competitors and the fans, this courageous young lady rolled herself across the line to finish the race.
Officials, coaches and the paramedics all rushed over to Leamons as soon as she crossed the finish line to make sure she was ok. It was later discovered that she might have suffered a broken leg. When she was carted off of the track she was sitting upright and smiling…Thank God.
Most Courageous Award: Crystal Leamons – Therrell High.
