L.A. "Keeping It Real" with Jamaal Day

A few years ago we saw then 6-4 Dwayne Day from tiny Montgomery County running things down in Middle Georgia and then we saw him become the calming influence on one of the best AAU Teams we’ve ever seen, the Atlanta Celtics with Dwight Howard, Josh Smith and Randolph Morris. Well now Jamaal “The Day After” Day, Dwayne’s kid brother is filling his sneakers at MC and starting to beep loud on the 4SHOT Hoops radar screen. I caught up with “JD” for a little session of “Keeping It Real” as we discussed the “Dawning of a new Day”

L.A.:  “Who have been some of the most influential people in your life”?

Jamaal:  “Mainly my AAU Coaches; Coach Jordan, and Coach Travis. I got to give my brother and my pops a lot of credit too.”

L.A.:  “What has been one of the most memorable moments in your career so far?”
Jamaal: “I would have to say my first dunk in middle school, seventh grade against Truetlen County. “

L.A.:  “What moment(s) would you most like to forget?”

Jamaal: “Two summers ago when I was playing summer league with my high school and one dude windmill’s on me in front of a lot of people, which was kind of embarrassing.”

L.A.: “What is the strongest part of your game?”

Jamaal:  “I would have to say driving and creating off the dribble, I can really dish the rock when needed.”

L.A.:   “What do you think you need to work on to take your game to the next level?”

Jamaal: “My outside game, I struggle sometimes with my shooting.”

L.A.:  “What type of personal and or team goals did you set for this season?”

Jamaal:  “My personal was to average more points and assist than I did last year, which I did. For the team is to make it to state and show people that Montgomery County can play with some of the best.”

L.A.:  “Who has been one of the toughest players you have had to guard and who is the best high school player you personally have ever seen?”

Jamaal: “The toughest player that I had to guard is my brother Dwayne. The most exciting (not best though) high school player I ever seen so far is Scenario Hillman.”

L.A.:  “Without tipping your hand, give me the names of some colleges that you would like to play for?”

Jamaal:  “Georgia, Duke, North Carolina, and Florida. “

L.A.: “Tell me something about yourself that people wouldn’t know by just looking at you?

Jamaal:  “That I’m a momma’s boy. I love hanging out with my mom.”

L.A.: “Do you have a nickname?”

Jamaal:  “J.D or, JAMMA”

Jamaal is slowy stepping out of the shadow cast by big brother Dwayne Day at MC.
L.A.: “How does summer ball (AAU) differ from the regular season?”

Jamaal:  “The players in AAU are more competitive than the season players that makes me play even better when I got some comp.”

L.A.: “Most AAU Teams have players that play in their natural position unlike in high school where you usually play out of position. What position do you think you would like to play at the next level?”

Jamaal: “The one or two spot.”

L.A.: “Are you a Player or a BALLER, now at 4SHOT we think Players just go out on the court and play like every other player on the court. Now a BALLER can take over the game, not in a selfish way but they can dominate at “a whole nother’ level?”

Jamaal:  “Come on man, is that a trick question? A BALLER!”

L.A.: “Who’s the best Baller in the family, you or your brother Dwayne (a 6-5 sophomore at Univ. of South Carolina)?”

Jamaal:  “Of course me (ha-ha). Naw, he has me by a long shot but I can make a little run with him. “

L.A.: “What type of advice does Dwayne give you about your game and how to handle recruiters?”

Jamaal:  “He tells me just to play my game and don’t worry about what the outcome of the game be just do what I do best. We never really talked about recruiters yet so I can’t answer the last part of your question.”

L.A.:  “If you could meet anyone in the world (past or present) who would it be and why?

Jamaal:  Vince Carter, because I like his style of play, plus he likes to bam on people.”

L.A.: “If you were not playing basketball what would you be doing now?”
Jamaal:  “Playing football.”

L.A.:
“Describe the kind of ride you would like to have (example a Chevy with “22’s etc…), whatever car you would like?”
Jamaal: “ I’d like to have an expedition with 24’s and a system with some hit in the back. “

L.A.: “What is your favorite TV Show and Movie?”
Jamaal:  “You may laugh at this but my favorite movie is the “Grinch” because Jim Carrey is really funny. My favorite tv show has to be ESPN.”

L.A.: “What type of music do you like and do you have a favorite artist or group?”

Jamaal: “I listen to all kinds of music, but my favorite group is Crime Mb.”

L.A.:   “What type of sneakers do you like to sport?”

Jamaal:  “You can never go wrong with a pair of J’s, I always have to have some Jordan’s.”

L.A.:   “What type of cloths do you like to wear?”

Jamaal: “Rocka-wear and Encye”

L.A:  “What’s your favorite food?”
Jamaal: “A burger and some fries”

L.A.:  “Who’s your favorite player?”
Jamaal:  Vince Carter

L.A.:  “Who’s your favorite team?”
Jamaal:  “Miami Heat”

L.A.: “What type of hobbies do you have?”
Jamaal: “Not many, really eating, sleeping, playing ball, and being on the phone.“

L.A.:Jamaal, thank you for your time, it has been my pleasure to be able to “Keep It Real” with you.”
Jamaal:  “No sir, thank you for interviewing me, and letting me keep it real with you. Holla!”
