ABCD Camp

Day One - Session 1 (Thursday, July 6,2006)

Reported by Larry "L.A." Williams - 4SHOT Hoops

All of the buzz the first day of camp was about the recent rumors that O.J. Mayo might be taking his game to sunny Southern California to play for the University of Southern California “Trojans”. Other O.J. at USC …wow, that would be huge!. Mayo and the rest of the ABCD Campers didn’t appeared to be fazed at all by all of the talk as they hit the floor for the first full day of game competition.

All of the younger first time ABCD Campers looked a little anxious and nervous early on, while the players who were making their second and third appearances at the camp just came out and played their games. Here is a look at the action from Day 1.

Jazz 73 vs. Cavs 55

Junior Cadougan a 6-0 freshman pt-guard from Community Christian School, in GA did a nice job of distributing the ball to teammates 6-2 Fr.-Kenneth Boynton (Blanche Ely H.S., FL) 14 points, 6-9 Jr.-Kodi Augustus (Mt. Zion Acad, TX) 12 points and his high school teammate 6-6 Jr.-Olu Ashaolu who scored 10 points and grabbed a game high 7 rebounds as the “Jazz” beat the “Cavs” by 18 points, 73-55. The “Cavs” 6-8 Jr.-Nalaey Kaswal (Boys to Men Acad., IL) topped all scorers with 16-points, teammate 6-3 Jr.-Miles Beatty (St. Anthony’s H.S., N.J.) added 13 points.

Hawks 76 vs. Bulls 63

Four players from the “Hawks” led by 6-5 So.-William Buford’s (Toledo Libbey H.S., OH) 16 points scored in double-figures as they disposed of the “Bulls” 76-63. North College Hill H.S. All-Americans 6-6 Jr.-Bill Walker and 6-5 Jr.-O.J. Mayo finished with 14 and 11 points respectively for the “Hawks”. 6-6 Jr.-Wendall McKines (Richmond H.S., CA) finished with 10 points. Tracy Smith a 6-8 Jr. from Mt. Zion Acad. in North Carolina had an impressive outing for the “Bulls” scoring a game high 18 points and pulling down 7 rebounds.  Three of the best point-guards in camp 6-0 Jr.-Jonathan Flynn (Niagara Falls H.S., NY) of the Bulls and 5-9 Jr.-Isaiah Thomas (Curtis H.S., WA) and 5-9 Jr.-Josh Miller (Harmony Prep, IL) both playing for the Hawks, each got a chance to show off their skills and add their names to the early list as possible candidates for the ABCD All-Star game.

Celtics 95 vs. 76er’s 70

The “Celtics” hammered the “76ers” on the boards and posted four players in double-figures in a  route. Corey Fisher looks like he is going to have a great camp. The 6-0 Jr. from St. Patrick’s H.S. in NJ showed that despite some injuries he still has the quickness to get to the hole. He only scored 4 points but dished out 5 assists and made 2 steals. 6-6 Jr.-Zach Graham (Peachtree Ridge H.S., GA) and 6-6 Jr.-Corey Stokes led the “Celtics” with 17 points apiece. All-American Taylor King (6-8 Jr. - Mater Dei H.S., CA) and 6-0 So.-Dwan McMillan (St. Benedict’s Prep, NY) each scored 11 points for the “76ers”.

Knicks 108 vs. Lakers 80

Maybe these “Knicks” should be playing in “The Garden” instead of the ones already there. In his first outing of the camp 6-10 All-American Jr.-Kevin Love (Lake Oswego H.S., OR) established early and often that he was here to take care of business scoring a game high 29 points as the “Knicks” pounded the “Lakers”. 6-9 So.-Drew Gordon (Archbishop Mitty H.S., CA) had a big game with 15 points and a game high 11 rebounds and 6-10 Jr.-Jon Leuer (Orono H.S., MN) finished with 17 points and 7 rebounds. 6-9 freshman sensation Renardo Sidney (Piney Woods H.S., MS) led the “Lakers” with 14 points but didn’t play particularly well.

Magic 86 vs. Suns 76

Jr.-Rico Pickett a 6-4 guard from Decatur H.S. in Alabama added his name to the list of players to keep an eye on as he dished out 7 assists to lead a balanced “Magic” attack in a 10 point win over the “Suns”. 6-7 Jr.-DeJuan Blair (Schenley H.S., PA) and 6-6 Jr.-Kenny Collins (Genessis One Christian School, CA) scored 15 and 10 points respectively for the “Magic”.  The “Suns” got strong efforts from 6-7 Jr.-Chris Grodnigo (St; Louis H.S., LA) and highly touted 6-6 Jr.-Eric Wallace (Glenn H.S., NC) who led them with 15 and 10 points.

Mavs 78 vs. Rockets 49

The “Rockets” never left the launching pad and were drilled by the “Mavs” by almost 30 points, 78-49. 6-8 Jr.-Alex Tyus (Harmony Prep, IL) had a monster game for the “Mavs” with a game high 20 points, he also hauled down 8 boards. 6-4 Jr.-Aaron Gilstrap (Marietta H.S., GA), 6-7 Jr.-D’walyn Roberts (Duncanville H.S., TX) and Darquavis Tucker (Saginaw Arthur Hills H.S., MI) all had solid games scoring in double figures. 6-3 Jr.-Demteri McCamey (St. Joseph H.S., IL) did a nice job of running the point for the “Mavs” dishing out 5 assists. The “Rockets” got some fuel from 6-4 So.-Teondre Williams (Meadowcreek H.S., GA) and 5-10 Jr.-Rahmon Fletcher (Paseo Acad., MO) as each scored in double-figures.

Pistons 75 vs. Nets 74

The closest game played in the first session went to the “Pistons” as they eked out a one-point thriller over the “Nets”, 75-74. Jonathan Baldwin a 6-5 sophomore from Aliquippa H.S. in football rich Aliquippa, PA scored 13 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished out 3 assists to lead the way. Three other “Pistons”, 6-2 Jr.-Tramaine Butler (Detroit Mackenzie H.S., MI), 5-11 Jr.-Kelvin Grady (East Grand Rapids H.S., MI) and 6-8 Jr.-Alexis Wangmere (Central Catholic H.S, TX) all chipped in with double-digit games. Nathaniel Lester a 6-5 Jr. from Canarsie H.S. in Brooklyn, NY had a nice game for the “Nets” with 13 points and 6 rebounds, teammate Jeffrey Teague (6-1 Jr.  - Pike H.S., IN) scored a game high 16 points.

ABCD Camp
Day One - Session 2 (Thursday, July 6, 2006)

Reported by Larry "L.A." Williams - 4SHOT Hoops

The second session of the day found the players a little more relaxed, I guess that’s what a good lunch and a little rest will do for you. The “Juice” was flowing and Love was still being handed out to opponents in the paint…..read on you’ll get it.

Mavs 83 vs. 76ers 59

The Mavs led by 6-3 Jr.-Darquavis Tucker’s (Saginaw Arthur Hills H.S., MI) 16-points, 6 rebound effort placed four players in double-figures as they rolled to their second win of the day. Adrian Bowie a 6-3 junior (Montrose Christian School, MD) did a nice job for the “Mavs” dishing out a game high 6 assists. Other “Mavs” in double figures included 6-7 Jr.-Evan Turner (St. Joseph’s H.S., IL) 11-points, 6-8 Jr.-Carlton Fay (Putman County H.S., IL) and 6-8 Jr.-Alex Tyus (Harmony Prep, IL) each finished with 10 points. Taylor King’s (6-8 Jr. - Mater Dei H.S., CA) scoring woes continued for the 76ers as he managed to only score 4 points in the loss. 6-3 Jr.-Derrick Rose (Simeon H.S., IL) looked like he was starting to put his game face on as he shared team scoring honors with 6-11 Jr.-DeAndre Jordan (Houston, TX) finishing with 12 points.

Bulls 66 vs. Knicks 59

6-8 Jr.-Tracy Smith (Mt. Zion Academy, NC) had another impressive outing with a game high 20 points and 6 rebounds as the “Bulls” bounced back from a loss in the morning session to hold off the “Knicks”. 6-0 Jr.-Johnny Flynn (Niagara Falls H.S., NY) helped the “Bulls” cause with 10 points and 6-9 Jr. -J.J. Hickman (Wheeler H.S., GA) almost pulled off a double-double scoring 6 points and grabbing 8 boards. The “Knicks” big man 6-10 Jr.-Kevin Love also had his second impressive outing as he recorded a double-double with 16-points and 13 rebounds. Note: Percy Miller a.k.a., recording rap artist “Lil Romeo  well just Romeo now he’s a sophomore in high school, did his thing against the big boys scoring 4 points while grabbing 4 rebounds and dishing out a pair of assists for the “Bulls”.

Cavs 70 vs. Rockets 67

The “Cavs” got a combined 49 points from 6-2 Jr-Zach Rosen (St. Benedicts Prep, NJ), 6- Jr.-Bradley Wananmaker (Roman Catholic H.S., PA), 6-2 Jr.-Brockeith Pane (David W. Carter H.S., TX) and 6-7 So.-Marshall Moses (Forest Hills H.S., NC) to hold off the “Rockets” and avoid an 0-2 start. Each player scored in double-figures. The Johnson Boys (not related) 6-3 So.-Shaquille Johnson (Robert E. Lee H.S., FL) and 6-6 Fr.-Karron Johnson (Patterson H.S., VA) topped the “Rockets”  in scoring with 14 and 10 points respectively.

Celtics 80 vs. Lakers 71

Once again despite not scoring a lot of points I was impressed with the way 6-0 Jr.-Corey Fisher (St. Patrick’s H.S., NJ) directed the “Celtics” when he has been on the floor. His 5-points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists helped up his teams record to 2-0. Some of his assist went to 6-8 Jr.-Braxton Dupree (Calvert Hall College H.S., MD) who had a monster game with 14 points and 9 rebounds. 6-9 Fr.-Terrell Vinson (Montrose Christian, MD) continues to be impressive in the early going he finished with 10-points and 7 rebounds for the “Celtics”. Another freshman or let’s say arguably one of the top freshman in the country 6-9 Renardo Sidney (Piney Woods H.S., MS) once again played ok for the “Lakers” scoring 12-points and grabbing 4 rebounds, but he still seems like he’s going through the motions; he has too much talent for that. 6-1 Jr.-Edwin Rios (Chaminade Prep, FL) had another solid performance for the “Lakers” with 11 points and a couple of sweet assists.

Hawks 93 vs. Magic 58

6-5 Jr.-O.J. Mayo (North College Hill H.S, OH) spread his wings a little just to let everybody know he was in the house, Mayo scored 18-points, grabbed 6 rebounds, dished out 4 assists and recorded 4 steals as the “Hawks” crushed the “Magic”. 6-5 So.-William Buford’s (Toledo Libbey H.S., OH) once again was impressive scoring 12 points and 6-6 Jr.-Wendell McKines (Richmond H.S., CA) did his thing hauling down 7 rebounds to go along with his 7-points. The “Magic” who shot a miserable 33% from the field got a 10-point, 6 rebound effort from 6-7 Jr.-DeJuan Blair (Schenley H.S., PA).

Jazz 72 vs. Pistons 50

6-2 So.-Anthony Crater (Flint Southwestern H.S., MI) dished out 8 assists and 6-4 Sr.-Melquan Bolding (Stepinac H.S., NY) scored 14 points as the “Jazz”  toppled a lifeless “Pistons” team by 22 points, 72-50. 6-10 Jr.-Elijah Holman (Richmond H.S., CA) and 6-6 Jr.-Olu Ashaolu (Community Christian, GA) each grabbed 7 boards in the win. The “Pistons” didn’t have one player who scored in double-figures.

Suns 90 vs. Nets 71

6-1 Jr.-Corey Chandler (Eastside H.S., NJ) displayed a nice all-around game scoring 10-points, grabbing 3 rebounds and dishing out 6 assists as the “Suns” cruised past the “Nets” 90-71. 6-3 Jr.-Tommy Manzano (Brooklyn, NY) added 15-points and 3 boards and teammate 6-4 Jr.-Edward Nixon (Lakewood H.S., FL) kicked in with 12-points and 7 rebounds in the win. 5-11 Jr.-R.L. Horton (Lanier H.S., MS) was solid in defeat scoring a game high 17-points for the winless “Nets”.
