Fab Five Camp: Any Gym is Home
Georgia Tech Recreational Center - Atlanta,GA
The 2006 Fab Five Camp featured some of the top 80 division one recruits in the country. The camp provides young ladies the opportunity to showcase their skills and abilities in front of major college coaches. The two day event would conclude with 2 all star games compose of the underclassmen team of 2008-09 and the upperclassmen team of 2007 players. The camp also provided fundamental skills and instructions to help improve a player game.
Comets versus Fever
One of the highlight games of the day would feature West Memphis 5’6 guard Jelessa Williams who constantly broke down the defense and put her defenders on skates. The game between the Comets versus the Fever would get on the way with a three pointer from down town from Shaw High Schools Treasure Johnson. Johnson was unstoppable, finishing with a game high 11 points and which included 3 three-pointers. The Fever team also was solid in the middle behind the play of the Chynna Burwell who is commited to the University of Virginia, with 6 points 4 rebounds and 2 blocks.
The halftime score would be Comets 16 Fever 14.
The Comets would lead at the half behind the play of Super Sophomore Jasmine Hassell from Wilson Central High School in Tennessee. The 6’2 post player finished second in scoring with 9 points and once she touched the ball in the paint it was lights out L.A.(Larry Williams). The 5’7 junior guard from Greenbriar High Michelle Sweic came in second in scoring with 7 points but that would not be enough to seal a victory. The Comets would take this game by 5 points to the score 29-24.
Fab 5 Underclassman All-Star Game
The underclassman game featured the best of the camps elite players playing in Black and White. The game would consist of two twelve minutes halves; with subs every 4 minutes. The game would start off fast with a drive in the lane on a lay up by shooting guard Jaqueria Forney who would blew by her defender
with lightening speed. Forney would run off six straight points until teammate Lindsey Welker started to get in the scoring act.
(Lindsey by all means would have been chosen MVP if there was an award. So 4SHOT Hoops would verbally like to say congratulations to Lindsey Welker for the camp MVP award.)
O.K. back to the game. Lindsey finished with a game high 15 points, scoring mostly inside with post moves and put backs. Lindsey step outside the paint to hit a jumper to show her versatility and it was all down hill from there for the White team. Washington D.C. finest Chasity Clayton who plays for Bishop O'Connell in Alexandria, Virginia would pour in 9 points, including a deep three-pointer from down town to push the game to double digits. Teammates Kori Penland from Gordon Lee High School scored 7 points, Chandler McCabe from Orlando Bishop Moore School Florida also scored 7 points and Chelsea Jones 6 points.
The Black team would not put up that many points but were lead by a team high 9 points from Jasmine Hassell.
Final score White 64 Black 33.
Fab 5 Upperclassman All-Star Game
The final game of the day was the upperclassman game between the White and Black teams class of 2007 best of the camp. The game was close at first but ended in a victory margin of 21 points.
The White team jump out right away on a three-pointer from Stephenson High Schools Kirstyn Wright. Wright continued with another three-pointer to finish with a team high 8 points, along with 2 blocks 3 rebounds and 1 assist. Wright stock soared as coaches watched her play consistently through out the two days. Ely Brittany would score 6 points on drives and hustle plays to give the White team an edge with 6:45 to go into the first half.
Then came the raging Black team, coached by Toni Gore who urged her players to play hard, “play like somebody hit you in the face”. Believe me it worked, as the Black team took the lead with a basket by Brittany “Shaq” Daniels from the famous Randolph Clay High School on a lay up. Daniels finished second on the team in scoring with 11 points. Tia Lewis from Worth County Georgia finished with a game high 14 points, along with 4 rebound. Look for Tia to put Worth County on the map in 2007 with her power to dominate the paint. While Tia held down the paint the outside belonged to Jacky Nikic with a contributing 10 points, along with 2 three-pointers from beyond the arch. Guard Dawn Evans chipped in 7 points as the Black team closed out the victory 52-31. The point guard play of Jelessa Williams would woo the crowd as she shook her defender, fell to the floor and continued dribbling. Williams is a must see. Until next year.
